This is the 4th day in a row that I have started working at 8am and finished at 2am. Yes I take breaks during the day or I would never see daylight. Do the rest of you have a cut off time? or just work until it is done? In all fairness, it seems like I work a nonstop for weeks/months, but if something family related is going on (kid has ice hockey game, wife is off during an occasional weekday, out of town ice hockey tournament) I am there no exceptions, I don't care what needs finished. It's a give and take situation,

Who's a 9-5er? and who has a schedule similar to mine? Just curious

I usually start working around 7:30 - 8:00AM and will work until 5:00PM.

Much like Scott I start around 8am and finish up at 430 or 5. Try not to work the weekends or late at night. I have found that if you treat it like a 9-5 things are less stressful. I do occasionally get up early and work, and sometimes do a Saturday. Just like a normal job sometimes overtime is warranted and "mandatory" but only if its neccessary.

The standard appraisal answer, "well, it depends."

I'll work very long days; start around 8ish and go until 10 or 11pm when necessary. With breaks of course. However, despite very long days I take vacations several times a year. Shut it all down and get out of town.

I'll be here for a while this evening and probably some on this coming weekend.

In general terms I try to limit it to 12 hour days. Sometimes it is not possible but my experience has been that after that length of time, unless I'm working on real easy stuff like a building sketch or attaching pictures, my cognitive skills are pretty much shot and my typing skills diminish. Caffeine only goes so far. I would much rather put it off, get my 6 to 7 (or on a really good night 8) hours of sleep, wake up at 4 or 5 AM and finish it off feeling rested.

I start after 9 but sometimes the office phone starts ringing at 8. No appointments prior to 10 because I don't want to fight traffic. No appointments after 4 for same reason. Late afternoon and early evening is spent with family. Writing starts at 8 and can go beyond 4am...Totally swamped with full fee orders. Trying to keep up! The wife is an appraiser and she helps. Daughter is a trainee and she works part time getting reports started and entering data! Would love to bring on additional appraiser but I can't find one with my work ethic who is NOT successful on their own!

I sometimes burn the midnight oil but mostly I work regular daylight hours. I don't accept every order that gets thrown my way - just enough to make the money I need and still have a life. The old "live to work / work to live" thing. I prefer the latter.

You need to work for a different boss. That slavedriver is not worth the trouble. :new_all_coholic:

Today was pretty typical...i am a late riser.
8 am - breakfast (i skipped today)
8 - 11 - worked on a 4 property assignment. I inspected them 2 days ago - about 4 hours worth
11 - drove 20 miles to an appraiser group board meeting over lunch... Back home about 1 pm. Worked until 4:00. Caught the early news weather, washed my extremely dirty truck by hand, and watered the garden. Visited with the farm boy who is spraying my fields (kill down for a no-till soybean crop. He plants Monday) Went to a friends house for about an hour. Worked on the above reports until 10 pm. And now I am here. I will go in and eat supper in a few, to bed about 12.

Tomorrow... I will have breakfast, then work on this miserable project some more...if my helper has set an appointment for a large parcel SFR, I will attend the inspection with her... I won't finish the 4 reports until the weekend. I will likely do an all nighter Friday if I haven't made much progress on these farms. Will pull the plug on the office phone at noon tomorrow. I do about 70% of my report writing from Friday Noon to Sunday Midnight.

Turned down a commercial building in the country today. Nah, too much fun. I would do it...if it was another lender. This lender can be a PITA on comm stuff.

I tend to be task oriented. Get up between 4 to 6 AM, on the computer... on the road by say 9, sometimes 11 AM... back when comp work is done. Today was a writing day and tough comps so I gridded my comps then went to get pictures. I need 4 to 5 hours of uninterrupted quiet to write, so I work around that. I just finished a report and sent it over, so that was two written today. And an FHA final, so a typical day is 6 AM to at least 9/10 PM. I have a friend who says "Appraising is not a job, it's a life style", it's' true for me.
