If anyone is leaving the business and you want to sell your curent M&S book, please contact me. Click my screen name to send an e-mail.

A residential handbook is only current until the next quarterly update.

You include a photo of the handbook on a bookshelf to support the made-up Cost Approach.

Admittedly few can do a creditable cost approach--too many have to rely on a "made-up Cost Approach."

As JTip pointed out, the book would only be helpful to you for a month or less. Cost updates which come with the subscription are a necessity.

Please people, quit the sniping.

There are a whole bunch of reasons why a recent M&S book can be of interest to appraisers. The CA is only one aspect, although it would not be totally accurate using older data. I already understand that.

You're excused - now please get back to work on more productive items.

Mr. Mudd was kind enough to send me PDF's of a couple of pages in the Craftsman book. (Thanks!)

It is organized in a way that more closely follows the cruddy UAD 'ratings' process we must adhere to these days. And the cost of the Craftsman book is FAR less than M&S.

I use craftsman for current costs, but still refer to the old M&S for other info not related to current costs.

Craftsman runs year by year and does not prorate the price. Paying the annual full price now for 2013 seems silly. But if you go to their site now you will see that you can try it free for 30 days. That should get you a chance to look it over and by the end of the trial the 2014 edition will be ready.

If it matters, though they do not say it, it works with Windows 8.

The National (sq. ft.) Building Cost Estimator System Requirements:

PC with 1 gigahertz (GHz) or higher Intel (or equivalent) processor recommended.

Requires up to 25 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space.
512 MB system memory.
800 x 600 video resolution, video adapter and monitor. 1024 x 768 resolution or higher recommended.
DSL or Cable recommended for Internet access.
