What Does Asbestos Siding Look Like?

WOW... THANKS FOR ALL THE PICTURES. TALK ABOUT A FLOOD. I AM KNEE DEEP. I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE INFO.

At one time U.S. Navy ships were full of asbestos. Asbestos insulation on all the steam pipes, asbestos tile on the interior decks, asbestos in all of the overheads.

Back in '74 I was on a guided missile destroyer that underwent a year of refitting in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. 6 months of living in that closed in ship while workers ripped up tiles and cut all the insulation out with air saws. A permanent yellow haze of asbestos fibers.

Even my 120 year old house is covered with asbestos tile.

My days are numbered.

If they are removed, they must be handled as a toxic material.
Only in some states. Many states recognize asbestos/cement shingles are not toxic or requiring special handling so long as they are not pulverized. Today, fiberglas replaces the asbestos and a shingle similar to A/C is available. There were pre-drilled holes and the siding was nailed with aluminum nails usually. They are lapped like wood shingles.

I have removed them from a house (Dad's). Careful prying usually resulted in an intact shingle being removed. We buried the shingles, legally at the time. Of course, dad died of Lung Cancer, but he smoked 3 packs a day - Kent's for many years. Kent cigarettes from the 1960' s contained a micronite filter made from...you guessed it, fiberous asbestos. So asbestos may have killed him.

Asbestos/Cement was also common in water pipes in the 60's and 70's. Cheap and prone to rupture, the whole of Bella Vista Village, AR is underlain by them. I designed the waterlines in a number of subdivisions when I worked under the engineering department there. Metal was used for large mains and very small ones, but the 6" and 8" were almost all A/C.

Hey, are we nerds or what. only geeks would have photos of asbestos siding.

Gotta go, slide rule convention tomorrow.

:rainfro: :rainfro: :rainfro: :rainfro:

My house was built in the 40's and is covered in Asbestos siding that has been covered with Latex paint. I got to the thread too late to be of any help. I could have taken a pic in the carport and posted for you .. sorry ....

Hey TC .... can you get me one of those pocket protectors while you're there??

Gotta go, slide rule convention tomorrow.
Ooh, bbbbbut... that's the same day as the Treck Convention, and the httml "book of the month" club meeting. :(

Thanks Lee Ann -- I just pirated your comment and added it to my "Environmental Hazards" coments.

Thanks M Leggett -- I didn't realize asbestos was in these tiles, but somewhere back in my memory, I do recall something about this.

Have just completed an inspection of an old house and it has these types of tiles throughout. Will include Lee Ann's comment too.

"Youz guys" are invaluable! :clapping:

I was thinking the same thing. That first shot is right off a Google image search.

John, you are absolutely correct about where that pic came from....does that make you a geek also?? You must have done the same search I did right?? Amazing what you can find on the internet eh? Since you utilized the same method as I, welcome to the nerd side if you weren't previously here!!! ;) I have had some of those pics tucked away in a file on my computer for quite some time. I feel that these pics are great for reference especially for someone who has never seen this type of siding. :P

NERDS RULE!!!!!!!!
