What makes one an "MAI Candidate"?

The acceptable title I believe, is Associate Member of the Appraisal Institute, assuming you have been accepted as a candidate for the MAI or SRA.

When joining AI, you apply as either an Associate or Affiliate. If you are attempting to get a designation, you would specify which designation you are going for.

Also, MAI and SRA, per AI, are not acronyms. I believe they were at one time, but now simply denote a particular designation.

AI may not recognize "advanced candidates", so the question becomes what do potential employers mean when they are advertising a position which requires a designation or "advanced candidates?"

I have always interpreted the term to mean an appraiser who has completed pretty much everything except their demo report.

Ken,

You are on target with your interpretation.

As I recall, those long knives on the AI admissions committee
use to make it really clear about the use and abuse of AI, canidate,
and references when you became a canidate. I think you could say
you were a canidate of the American Institute, but you couldn't say
you were an MAI candidate.

I am an associate member of the AI, I am working toward a MAI designation.

Rusty

To be a Candidate, you have to be formally approved as a Candidate Membership in the AI. As someone pointed out, all you can say is that you are a Candidate Member of the AI. You are not a "member".

Elliott, I remember the "long knives", too.

I still have my name badge...Says "SRA Candidate".

The AI no longer has "candidates" of any kind.
