HERE'S MY OLDER THAN DIRT STORY - true, by the way. As a kid, my numerous siblings and I hand dug a basement under our house. It was half crawl space, and half dirt cellar when we bought it; and today is a full walkout basement. All the digging was done by kids using a spade and 2 buckets. The dirt removed levelled the yard, filled in ruts in the alley and made a bike jump at the end of the alley.

I'm glad I'm not appraising that one for FHA!!!

I thought they were named after Cyndi Lauper

I know two local communities in my area that had their own small block plants around the turn of the century. I guess you would have to know (if you really wanted to) where these cinder blocks came from to determine their actual age. Many were made on site as some have mentioned or at the local cement plant.

As far as quality issues, most appear to be in good condition still.

I remember my Dad telling me years ago about the difference between cinder blocks and concrete blocks.

While they look similar to the casual observer, there is a difference.

The concrete blocks weigh more than the cinder blocks. My dad never liked the cinder blocks, told me that the only people that used them were "lazy masons that didn't want to have to lift the concrete blocks to the top of the wall"

He always used concrete blocks, and when I got old enough, I was the one that had to lift them up to the top of the scaffold.

Boy do I miss those days, Ha Ha.
