Which tablet PC to purchase?

Doug I am just down the road a ways and can offer you one suggestion : GET THE VIEW ANYWHERE SCREEN. I have the Samsung Q1 and it is virtually useless. I have been testing Alamodes Field tool Davinci since its conception and it is a blank white screen in the sun.

Last I heard Dell was willing to deal over the phone and you could get a Motion LS 800 with View Anywhere shipped for $2k out the door.

Thanks for the "view anywhere" tip. As I have never used a computer in the field, I wouldn't have thought about the glare factor. As a laser measure user, unfortunately I have discovered the challenges of seeing a little red light in full sun. Some day I will buy a nice pair of rose-colored glasses. :icon_cool:

Doug,
I didn't think about it much either until I tried sketching a property on the UMPC and could not see anything on the screen ! What a bummer that was.

I hope you have a safe and relaxing time in Hawaii ! !

Myself I am heading towards some SNOW !

FWIW, I've been "preaching" on the screen issue for years, LOL. What good is a device if you cannot see the screen in the environment it is being used in? :-\

Anyway, FWIW, the LS600 is an "EOL" (End of Life) product now. The current products are the LE1700 and the C5. Both are available with the VAD (View Anywhere Display) option.

For a convertible, my current favorite is the Lenovo X61 with the "SuperView" screen. The SuperView screen is actually the less expensive option, believe it or not... :-)

Hope this helps!

Here's another option. . .I subscribed to "gotomypc.com". I take my laptop with me to the site. I do the sketch and write my notes, then return to the car and log on to my office computer using Spring PCS broadband. I can either finish the report on the laptop in the car and email out, or finish it on my office computer via remote access and send out.

Bottom line for me is that I can get a top end desktop for $400 from Dell that will scream compared to the current cropof tablets.

Another option I have used for several years if the Pocket Total and a Dell Axim.

Mark:

Please provide the link to the $400 Dell that will scream compared to the current crop of tablet PC's...

TIA,

I have the Motion ls 800 with the view anywhere screen I use nexus and transfer it to Medina Also use Disto A6 with target plates & blue tooth works great with nexus. Bought mine through Apex

I buy my PC's on Dells small business section in the refurbished units. I got a dual core processor unit with 2 gig of memory and all the bells and whistles for under $400. They even had a special running with 19 inch flat screen monitor. I think I paid $499 total.

Go to dell small business and then click on the outlet center for the refurbished machines.

Mark:

I understand. We have a LOT of Dell equipment at our offices as those who have been there can attest. It was all bought through their Small & Medium Business group. I'm not just casually acquainted with Dell's line(s)... ;-)

I'm not trying to be argumentative or give you a hard time... :-) I just try to stay current on this stuff and thought I had missed something. I was just hoping to get a link to a unit for comparison purposes. Thanks anyway.

Your points were well taken. We all need to put our money to best use these days and the manufacturers all want to entice us to buy the new shiny object when, in fact, even "yesterday's" middle-of-the-road machine will more than suffice for the things most appraisers do. We should all know that investing in a faster HDD, dual monitors, or something similar is a much better use of the dollar than a faster CPU... you'll simply get a bigger and faster return on that dollar spent... :-) Most, however, don't want to do a "component-ectomy" and end up simply purchasing a new machine. And, also, tend to opt it up beyond what is really needed (IMHO, and yes, I do that too - LOL.) Starting off in the refurb section can help put a cap on that tendency... :-)

Merry Christmas to all!
