Who all hires trainees? State DOTD and who else. Thanks in advance for any info. I would like to get a trainee position with some back bone so that I will not get shafted again. Anyone know how different working for the state is?

It doesn't matter who you work for, you still have to park your trainee license under a certified. Working for the DOTD with no mentor doesn't get you certified. Most of the firms I know work as contractors for the DOTD. The DOTD does maintain, for lack of better words, an approved list. It's public record and for a small fee they'll provide it. You may want to solicit the list. Good luck.

I understand you cant work alone as a trainee. When working for the dotd you get paid by them, and work for a supervisor who is also employed by the state right? The civil service website indicated the pay for a trainee started at like $13. The louisiana real estate appraisers board website also has a list that is free.

What I meant but didn't write: Can you park your trainee license under the DOTD supervisor? Remember when working for the gubmint you don't need to be licensed and from what I've been told many DOTD employees aren't licensed. That's why I mentioned the contractors (the DOTD list is a list of approved DOTD contractors). IIRC the contractors have to be certified with several years experience. I could be wrong, just call them up they're usually pretty helpful. Don't give up and good luck.

FYI per new LA law all appraisers w/ DOTD are required to be licensed as of 2010 or 6 years after their start date. A few have been licensed for 15+ years.
