Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

Great, I appreciate your time and input. I heard about the Lenovo and that it wasn't available in the US. I found a reseller that prices with pounds so I guess they sell them in England.

Been holding onto this for just a little bit (NDA) but the embargo has lifted and you can find all sorts of stuff on various sites. When I first learned of this, I honestly expected the announcement to be in conjunction with the BUILD conference in late April. When the NDA details hit (with subsequent dates, etc.) I was surprised that the release date is early May (05/05), so essentially, they are simply announcing this ahead of my (incorrect) predicted date - shipping is essentially the same. Anyway, for many of you, this is a device you may have been waiting for - the MS Surface 3 (not Pro 3, which is already out.) I have not even SEEN this myself yet, but based on the specs alone, I think this will be a winner. Once I get some actual "hands on" (which may not be for a month!) I'll go into more detail - I simply wanted those who might be sitting on the fence to know about this and that IF you are looking, it makes sense to wait until May IMHO. For the adventurous, you CAN pre-order today, but only Wi-Fi (non-LTE) versions have shipping dates showing. Of course, my samples are already "in the pipe" and I will be getting regular retail units with both WI-FI only and LTE for testing, development, etc. I'll publish pictures, hands-on thoughts, etc. once I get real retail units in hand. If I get a sample early, I may offer my general thoughts in relation to other devices, but as usual, I will not be making recommendations until I use a retail unit for a while.

Please note that this is not the (still rumored) SP4 which will be "beefier" for those who need "heavy lifting" - I don't expect any real news on the SP4 until we are closer to W10 General Availability.

In the interim, I am linking this video:

And a couple of "Press" pictures:

I'll sort thorough the many announcement/opinion articles and link to the better ones later.

Between yesterday and today, I dad a chance to fondle a few Surface 3's. Summarily, I really liked what I saw. Of course, as with almost any new device, one can find areas to nit pick, but overall I really liked the device. It has a great balance of performance and features at a decent price and I believe it will turn out to be quite popular with many Apex customers. As always, the proof is in the pudding and I will dedicate some hands on time in the field before making a recommendation. This will not happen before the retail units come out in early May. The sample units being supplied by MS to various people are all pre-production units (and just like the early in-store demo SP3 units, the ones in the stores now are locked down so you can't really put them through proper testing) and I never rely on sample units for making purchase recommendations to customers. That said, I am comfortable enough with both what I have seen/experienced myself and including the known specs and info from trusted & reliable sources about what is not yet public to say that I recommend looking at the deices for yourself and IF the general class of device (~10 -inch vs. a smaller ~8 -inch or larger ~12+ -inch) fits YOUR use case scenario, I would wait on purchasing anything else until these are actually shipping. IF it LOOKS like it might fit the bill for you, I would pre-order one (there are likely to be shortages?) with the knowledge that you can cancel the order before shipping if you change your mind. You're basically just reserving a spot in line ;-)

I'll touch more on this later, but for MY use, the $499 (2 GB + 64 GB internal storage) is sufficient for a companion device, but I feel that most appraisers will see the value in getting the $599 version which has twice the RAM and twice the internal storage (4 GB + 128 GB.) On both varieties that I was able to do some very light informal testing (more intense coming soon), the raw performance increase between this device and (say) a 2GB and 4GB TP10 was definitely noticeable - more so between the two 4 GB units for some reason which I have yet to ascertain to my own satisfaction. I suspect there is a "spec" element which is providing this increased performance jump, but since some of the specs are still unverified, I simply do not know at this point. In any case, I had already ordered the 4GB units for internal testing, though I will be sure to obtain a few 2GB units since for a lot of our Enterprise type customers (who DO have properly designed mobile software), the 2 GB units are easily sufficient for their needs. They (like many of you?) will require (or want) LTE, so there is a bit of a wait to purchase still... Both the pre-order and release dates on LTE models are still a matter of NDA - all I can say is that "it won't be long" before one can pre-order those units.

I'll also spend some time covering the various accessories - the official MS ones are suitably high in quality and my general feeling/prediction is that, though there will be 3rd party options, IF you really want/need a particular accessory, the official MS one is worth the few percentage points higher price. Not everyone will NEED the accessories, though, so my recommendation is to only get the essentials and take a wait and see attitude on the the others. In other words, don't get caught up in the excitement and get everything at pre-order. For example, the SP3 is more powerful and is a more likely candidate for NEEDING (or strongly desiring) the desk dock. My recommendation for those who are on a moderate and sensible budget is to make the $99 accidental drop protection policy the FIRST option, THEN see how much you are willing to spend on other accessories. If you live in an area with bright sunshine, budget about $25 for an anti-glare screen protector. For us, the $50 pen makes sense, that getting that really depends on whether your software takes advantage of it, so you can always get that later IMHO. The keyboard cover is nice, but I have a feeling that a different one may be a better choice (I'll explain more later, when I can.) Point is, get the right accessories first and add others later as needed vs. as imagined ;-)

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanks for keeping us updated on this Randall! I just purchased my Apex 6 site license yesterday and I was going to go the TP10 route until this came up (I foolishly missed out on the sale for these that you pointed out). I think I'll probably to wait until you could give us some further insight on this Microsoft surface model (especially LTE) before taking the plunge. I'm definitely in the "companion device" camp, just need something to generate "field data" to work on when I'm back in the office, not trying to run a full-fledged appraisal package off of it. I'm using your MSA sketcher with a 10 inch Sony android tablet and I like that form factor, I believe 8 inches would be too small and 12 inches will be too large. A nice 10" Windows tablet with the correct 4/3 aspect ratio would seem to be ideal. I have a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 and a Motion CL 900 but neither of those devices have made the cut for me as far as ditching the clipboard goes. I'm running a program called AMI Duos on the windows tablets which allows them to run android apps with full access to the Google Play Store and it has worked flawlessly so far, and I'm also using an android app to output the GPS signal from my cell phone over Bluetooth back into the Windows tablet for navigation. I was hoping a combination of tethering and this app would be a suitable substitute for an LTE card however this hasn't proved to be as elegant a solution as I thought it would be. I'm hoping that this new Microsoft surface with the LTE option will provide good GPS performance, in the markets I cover that is a vital concern. Definitely appreciate all the work you have invested in this thread!

Hi Mike,

Glad to help. Given what you write, I think you are wise to wait - especially since it will not be long. FWIW, I still enjoy my TP10 with 4G LTE, but given the current prices, I believe the S3 will be the better device for most. Exceptions will exist (for example, the TP10 has a $54 rugged case for those who NEED it) and Lenovo may well drop their price again now that the S3 is "out"... We'll see. If you have the ability to see an S3 in person, I think you'll be impressed. The 3:2 aspect ratio is a near perfect compromise for what we do IMHO. I need to do some concentrated work on screen protectors - the N-Trig digitizer nibs are softer than the hard type used in the traditional Wacom digitizer systems, but I hope to have all this worked out by the time new shipments arrive so that we have a good solution in place.

Congrats on your Av6 thing. Please let me know if you have any questions. Have you been able to set up a webinar yet? I'd like to be able to sit in on one that you attend so we could perhaps exchange some ideas...

Hi Randall, thanks for pointing out one thing I forgot to mention - a ruggedized outdoor case and pen input are must have features for any new tablet I buy. That is one advantage of my Sony experiences Z2 tablet, is fully waterproof and dustproof with no extra bulky case to buy. I just put a soft silicone bumper on it and hope for the best, so far so good. I did buy it capacitive pen for it that works fairly well for cold weather glove use however it is not even close to being is functional as what a proper digitizer pen input set up should be. I did my first drawing with version 6 last night after watching the webinar, being a MSA user It was fairly intuitive and I got it done in short order. I do have a few webinar suggestions which might lead to fewer calls to your technical support line in the future, I think it would be great if you would sit in on one with me so we could bounce some ideas back and forth, let me know when you want to set this up!

I will be looking into various "case" options for the Surface 3 as part of my normal routine (our Enterprise and County Jurisdiction types always want/need that sort of thing), so I'll be sure to mention what I find that works well.
On the Webinar thing, I'll have Robert or Brian reach out to you to set things up at a time that is convenient for you. I'd look forward to sharing ideas, etc. :)

FWIW, I am told that Costco has a "bundle" for the S3 with 4GB/128GB, black Type Cover, N-Trig active pen and MS Office 365 for $699 ( Costco membership required for this $80 savings.) http://www.costco.com/Microsoft-Surface-3-Bundle-|-Intel-Atom-Quad-Core-|-Full-HD-Plus-|-Office-365-Personal.product.100176667.html I believe that the 4GB/128GB version is a better fit for most appraisers, but if you can get by with 2GB/64GB (the device can handle a huge capacity microSD card, so the main item is RAM and storage is secondary by comparison), that bundle is $599. You can find several examples of videos on the S3, but for convenience, the one at the link above is decent - it shows examples of "in hand" and things you can do with the pen. Its a shame that more software doesn't really properly embrace the pen (vs. just use it) since this aspect can be a huge productivity factor IMHO.

Hope this helps!

FWIW, I read this review with interest, and it pretty much sums up my feelings, as well. Of course, our typical work day/environment is a little different from the reviewer's, but the end results are about the same: If you are in the market for a 10" - 11" companion device, the S3 should really be on your short list to consider. If you want/need built-in 4G\LTE (vs. tethering, which works for me), you won't have much longer to wait before they go up for order. Looking forward to my retail version so I can share some real world appraisal numbers, etc.

I appreciated that they included a few full size images from the camera, too. Select the thumbnail to see the full sized images. The new camera addresses a serious shortcoming for appraiser/inspectors types in the earlier (SP3) camera.

Hope this helps!

FWIW, here is a link to a review of the upcoming Surface 3. The author is well known to me and I agree with several of his points. I take issue with a few points he makes but overall it is well written and accurate with the relative performance parts. I should be able to comment on the relative performance items compared to a few other recent devices within the next 10 days (?) and hopefully, I can show some pictures of a rugged case or two :-)
