Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

I noted that the SP9 has a new Firmware update available (for Intel-based models only.)

(FWIW, my initial gut feel on the ARM-based versions is that for running most legacy appraisal software apps, they keep up with something in the neighborhood of the SP8 with similar RAM, etc. I realize that my environments are now not closely aligned with most readers here, but if I were still an appraiser who was in the market to upgrade from (say) a laptop/tablet from the circa SP6 or SP7 timeframe, I would definitely lean toward the ARM version of the SP9.)

Hope this is helpful!

Noted that BestBuy has the SP9 (13" - 2880 x 1920 @ 120Hz) with Core i5, 16GB RAM and 256GB of SSD storage and included keyboard for $999. Unless you plan on suing it for a desktop replacement, this configuration is more than adequate for most appraisers IMHO. Sine the SSD is removable, you can easily add to the storage if you feel it is needed. While I (personally) prefer the ARM "SQ" version because it can be had with 3/5G, even though I have had no problem getting wireless connectivity in the field with both iPhones and Android phones - and besides, one usually has their phones with them anyway... ;-)

Article which also has the BestBuy link: https://www.windowscentral.com/hard...eased-is-now-under-dollar1000-with-a-keyboard

Hope this helps!

Thanks for keeping us updated Randall!

Randall, I'm thinking about upgrading my laptop I use as my desktop, and I'm not in a rush. Do you think it's worth waiting for the new AI enabled chips?

I have not used nor even seen one of these yet. I had some experience with the previous version a few years ago and liked it. We'll have to see how this new Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Gen 2 stacks up against the newer SP10 due out in April (June for my much-anticipated ARM version?) but I like what I read about this new "Detachable" so far. That said, I recognize that my penchant for wanting a more energy efficient combo may not match up well with some (most?) readers here, but based on my previous experiences with "WoA" (Windows on ARM) tablets and laptops, they were good enough for my needs back then, and from what people I trust tell me about the improvements in CPU & OS in this next gen, I feel confident that the newer ones will surpass my needs if not my desires ;-)

FWIW, we are now advised that we won't be back in the USA before the first week in June, so my ability to stay up to date with "hands on" is definitely limited for a little while but I'm definitely excited to check out the SP10 with ARM/Windows Germanium when we get back!

Hope this is of help!

[Edit] - It might be my portable VPN hardware causing a problem (?), but for some reason I was unable to embed a link above to a short article on "Germanium: so I'll try to do it here:

Update – get ready.

“Inside” (but predicted) info from the reliable Zac Bowden on what we’re about to see announced later today regarding what I’ve been saying lately about the upcoming MS Surface devices running on WoA (Windows on ARM)… As you may remember, I’ve been running Surface Pro X devices (ARM) for a few years, but while I liked them, I didn’t think they were the right combination of size & performance for most (if not all) readers here. I still do not have real user access to even an early engineering sample of the new devices, but “trustworthy friends who do” have confided in me that we’re finally close to these devices hitting the spot. We should know very soon… I already have a standing order on one :) In the meantime, here is a quote to chew on:

Microsoft has worked very closely with Qualcomm on its new Snapdragon X chips, resulting in a moment for Windows on Arm that it’s never had before. The next wave of Windows on Arm devices will be the first with true all-day battery life and consistent instant wake without sacrificing performance. These new chips do trade blows with Apple Silicon.” Source: https://www.windowscentral.com/soft...ial-surface-and-windows-11-AI-event-on-may-20

[Edit]: Quick reference for some of the PC's (and, of course, Surface Pro) announced: https://www.engadget.com/here-are-a...ot-pcs-with-snapdragon-x-chips-184825090.html

Hope this helps!
