The Appraisal Foundation Blazes Trail for Next Generation of Appraisers, Funds Pathways to Success Scholarship for Appraiser Diversity Initiative
(Washington, DC) September 30, 2024 –The Appraisal Foundation today announced a new scholarship program which would blaze a trail for aspiring appraisers to fulfill their experience requirements with financial backing. The Foundation will fund $1.22 million over three years to establish the Pathways to Success scholarship, which will be administered by the Appraisal Institute as part of the Appraiser Diversity Initiative. The scholarship is open to all aspiring appraisers and would cover tuition to enroll in a Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal (PAREA) module, which fulfills the experience requirement for an appraiser credential.

This multi-year scholarship is the second phase of The Appraisal Foundation’s Pathways to Success initiative. Starting in 2021, Pathways to Success began as a conditional grant to support bringing a PAREA module to market. As a result of The Appraisal Foundation’s $500,000 investment, the Appraisal Institute brought the first PAREA modules to market in 2023 and celebrated the first graduates earlier this year.

“Today the Foundation is taking a bold step to build the next generation of appraisers,” said The Appraisal Foundation President Kelly Davids. “This scholarship program has been a long-held dream for our organization, and I am so pleased that we are moving forward to welcome new people to this exciting profession. I look forward to continuing to champion the importance of building a qualified appraiser workforce for years to come with this program.”
In a statement, the Appraiser Diversity Initiative stated, "We are pleased to announce the successful closing of our partnership with The Appraisal Foundation. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of all partners. We are eager to embark on this journey together to create value and drive success. Over the past 6 years, our sponsors' contributions have resulted in over 800 scholarships, directly benefiting those in which we serve. We will continue, through joint efforts, to demonstrate the power of working together toward a common goal of overcoming barriers to entry and provide support for opportunities for the next generation of professionals in the appraisal industry. As we look into the future, we remain committed to deepening this collaboration with The Appraisal Foundation and continuing to serve our communities with passion and purpose."

Speaking of that video, pretty nice interior illustrated there. Wait till the PAREA graduate goes into the homes where you have to breathe through your mouth only or fleas jump all over you...jus saying. It's all unicorns and rainbows in the classroom.... wait till they get out there.

I assume Attorney and CPAs have similar programs in place. What? You say they don't!

Never mind there is no proven racial bias or shortage of qualified appraisers. I wonder if the Diversity program is in violation of Equal Opportunity law.

The flowery language makes me want to puke.

A scholarship for what end? To graduate and be another "vendor" who mst bid for AMC orders, and bid so low to get one they can barely make a living? The limited segment of lender direct orders will not use a newbie so they will not qualify for it, and there is limited other private work available. Maybe the PAREA grads will be lucky enough (sarcasm) to graduate in time for the next degradation facing res appraisers, am sure one is in the works based on the last ten years.

Is the Appraisal Foundation aware of the grim dead-end conditions on the res license side? Can they guarantee a county assessor job after graduation? If not, what do they think will happen with PAREA graduates with a res license?

Well there must be something done. Many of us appraisers are aging out. Someone or entity sent out a survey to all appraisers. One of the questions was what age bracket our you.

During a recent visit to my doctor, I asked him, "How do you determine whether or not an older person/retiree should be put in an old age home?"
"Well," he said, "We fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No," he said. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON... OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE?

Of course, a sizeable segment of appraisers are aging out. Yet, even those who might be working full or part-time for the next 8-10 years - every field needs replacement and younger people entering, it but most fields have not seen the income and opportunities shredded year after year the way res license appraisal has.

The stakeholders have headed off a possible appraiser shortage by using WAIVERS to replace a portion of work and green using a PDC collection to replace appraisers in the inspection portion on a number fo orders. They just need enough appraises for the scraps or to do the problem child orders or a few complex or high-end ones.

The problem with PAREA is not going to be getting people to pass an exam. It is making the PAREA program profitable for educators. AI is working from a grant and from the goodwill of some of their members.
