In the north, both are built on concrete sono-tubes sunk below frost line. Haven't seen a porch built on a foundation....even the really old stuff.
 
Many of our houses have concrete porches. How would you classify these?

Rex may be wrong. Surprising!

In my wonderful market area, in my EXPERT opinion:
Porch - covered decking
Patio - brick or stone or slate or w/e at grade area
Stoop - entry deck or porch, made of any material, can be covered (portico is for losers!)
Balcony - a deck that isn't on the first floor
 
Wow so many replies, thanks for the valuable input. I'm just going to stick to my guns with my own definitions which are more or less the same as your guys. As long as there are pictures and written explanations supporting it I guess it doesn't really matter :p
 
What about a terrace?
 
Porches have to be big enough for a couple of rocking chairs and for the dogs to sleep under.
