I forgot you were a doctor.
No not a doctor. But I was a microbiology major in college. No matter how you attack me. It does not change the fact that a virus is not actually alive and that the typical path of a virus is to mutate. Typically a virus goes dormant without a host.

I believe the CDC came out recently and said that masks do protect the wearer, but I don't remember if it is the same as the protection to others.
I don't think mask protects the one wearing it. It is more of defensive move for the one wearing it against spreading it. It is a defensive move against spreading it.

My county is probably only county in TN that requires a mask as a mandate in TN. But, they also have one of lowest per capita infections in TN. Free mask are available in Shelby County at health department and many businesses just hand them out if you don't have one when you go in. Some even have a booth set up where you just get one, with hand sanitizer at the booth.

I was just providing a visual of an N95 mask.
I think he intended to point out that the mask shown has an exhaust valve meaning it does not protect others.
The so called scientific consensus
A consensus is not science. Consensus is a belief. Belief is a religion. Science is a method.

We cannot trust any of the papers put out because few are properly run, almost all have no peer review, and the publications consist of a few "old sources" which have failed miserably to edit and review the papers they publish and finally, 90% or more of the so-called "scientific" magazines are vehicles for people to "publish" improper and often deliberately misleading "research" in order to make a name for themselves or to add to their resume. That's assuming they even researched anything because the vast majority of Covid papers I've seen are summary reviews of papers written long ago and compiled some not so new insights, or they are opinion pieces. Again opinion and consensus have no part in science.
Some doctors have lost their jobs because they disagree with the so called consensus.
In China no small number have lost their freedom or their lives for voicing opposing opinion.

I was just providing a visual of an N95 mask. I was responding to the moderator's comment. Maybe you need to direct your comments to him.
Sure.

Thank you for posting a picture of a respirator. If the goal was to stop the virus, everyone would need to wear a respirator, not cloth masks, neck gaitors, or even ASTM Level 1 surgical masks.

Per CDC:

"A respirator is a personal protective device that is worn on the face or head and covers at least the nose and mouth. A respirator is used to reduce the wearer’s risk of inhaling hazardous airborne particles (including infectious agents), gases or vapors. Respirators, including those intended for use in healthcare settings, are certified by the CDC/NIOSH."

Wouldn't it be nice if people in a discussion tried to actually have a discussion and not win points?

They don't care about any of that. They heard from the experts that everybody needs to wear masks.

Regarding N95 respirators with exhalation valves:

"We have not been able to identify any peer-reviewed studies to support the recommendation to ban masks or respirators with exhalation valves."

This one statement from the above reference kind of says it all

"If there is one lesson that can be learned from the pandemic, it is the need for evidence-based practice where decisions are based on scientific and epidemiological studies. We should be careful that we do not rush to judgement based on perceptions of risk."

I don't think mask protects the one wearing it. It is more of defensive move for the one wearing it against spreading it. It is a defensive move against spreading it.
I have heard an approximation where if you wear a mask and others don't you reduce transmission by 30%. If wear a mask and the other person wears a mask than you can reduce transmission by 90%. It protects others from you more than it protects you from others, which is I think what you said.
