Mark Cuban warns the AI wars could end like the search engine crash — with one winner and a lot of losers

  • Mark Cuban says Big Tech's AI race mirrors the 1990s engine search wars, and could end the same way.
  • He warns that major players, such as Google and OpenAI, are overspending in a winner-takes-all race.
  • The investor says an AI bubble could burst soon, leaving one giant standing and everyone else broke.
I THINK CHATGPT WILL BE THE WINNER. HOW CAN I BUY STOCK IN CHATGPT?

These TV celebrities are incredibly annoying and deserve only to be ignored and muted. Google's AI is only good with images. Perplexity dominates for deep research. ChatGPT is jack of all trades, master of none. Claude absolutely tomps everyone else with software code and writing. Then there's all the open models that are hot on the tails of the proprietary ones (Kimi, Qwen, Meta, etc). I'm long open models, they are going to win in the end. The best way to invest is via the GPU makers and data center REITS.

It's not that hard to have an AI. Even my brother earlier this year came out with an AI chat.
It wasn't that good because it couldn't get uptodate info as fast as I needed. And it will take lots of resources and money to be the best.

You brother in-law must be a multi-millionaire and in the top 10% of computer science grads.

I'm legit offended that you don't offer the rest of us forumites whatever it is that you are smoking for breakfast...

Or, the nearby powerplant utilities who are selling a lot of electricity to these AI centers. In Okla. Google built their facility within 2 miles of a coal fired power plant and a hydroelectric plant. No solar panels, no wind turbines. They want reliable power.

I read they are restarting Three Mile Island for a Microsoft data center.

I personally wouldn't ever term Cuban as a media celebrity. He morphed into one because of his success in other endeavors. Maybe it's because I respect his role in pro BBall.

For anyone who thinks the billions and even trillions that are being invested isn’t going to transform our industry, watch the first 30 minutes of this podcast. Then do yourself a favor, watch the full podcast.

why is AI burning through so much cash? A token is about three or four characters and those characters cost money to produce.

Grok 4.1 (Fast variants): $0.20 input / $0.50 output per 1M tokens.

OpenAI’s most recent flagship (GPT-5.2): $1.75 input / $14.00 output per 1M tokens.

Grok 4.1 is dramatically cheaper — ~9× lower input, ~28× lower output.

Open AI/ChatGPT was cofounded by Elon Musk and about $45 million of seed money as a nonprofit. Sam Altman turned it into for-profit and kicked Elon out.

Elon not wanting to let that slide sued OpenAI, which may be in trouble because they have been hemorrhaging cash since day one. This dude nails it.

trial set for April 2026
