I'm not a huge fan of their politics and I AM NOT OLD lol but apparently I qualify. For $15 a year I'd assume I'd save a few bucks any real world examples or alternatives out there you care to share. I go out a lot but don't really travel too much what are you saving money on?

You don't need either, unless you are acting old.

Have heard good things about the one Alsie35 posted. Will be going the AMAC route if/when I join something like that. Thanks for posting the link. My mom was an AARP fan. She was happy with the benefits and discounts, but probably would have gone with AMAC if they would have been available back then and had similar benefits.

Digger: You're never too young to start saving what you can. Caught a one day 10% discount at the grocery store not too long ago.

I am not so old that I embrace a lot of what many of us view as anti-American initiatives that AARP does. Like gay marriage, mail in voting, gun control, forced masking, social distancing, etc. And the tons of political garbage they spew including the worse of their offenses - embracing "Climate Change" as if it were settled science. Now do you want to talk about an outfit that is not only a money-making insurance racket but a "non-profit" raking in millions?

So legit question here---In the interest of saving money when possible, and not reflective of any lifestyle change, :)

What evidence is there that AARP is so left leaning? I do read a lot of comments about how they are more peddlers for their insurance connections. But didnt see much about political or social views. I also see a lot of comments online about them really no advocating for 50+ folks at the federal level, but not seeing much else yet...

AARP Delta Dental insurance plans are said to carry a 20-30% premium. Won't say more about it!!

Seek out well-managed non-organizational plans like Mutual of Omaha, and you will probably do better.

ChatGPT: "Mutual of Omaha generally has a very good reputation, particularly in three areas:
  1. Financial strength
  2. Life insurance and Medicare supplement products
  3. Customer service

Financial Strength

One of the most important measures of an insurance company is its ability to pay claims decades into the future. Mutual of Omaha receives strong ratings from the major rating agencies:
Rating AgencyRating
AM BestA+ (Superior)
Moody'sA1
S&P GlobalA+
These ratings place the company among the stronger insurers in the United States and indicate a high capacity to meet policyholder obligations.

Customer Satisfaction

Mutual of Omaha was ranked #1 in J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, scoring well above the industry average and ranking first in six of eight customer satisfaction categories.
That is a significant achievement because J.D. Power surveys actual customers on factors such as:
  • Trust
  • Ease of doing business
  • Digital experience
  • Service quality
  • Problem resolution
  • Value for price

Medicare Supplement Reputation

Among retirees, Mutual of Omaha is often considered one of the better-known Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurers. Insurance agents frequently recommend it because:
  • The company has been in the Medigap market for decades.
  • It is financially stable.
  • Premiums are usually competitive.
  • Coverage is widely available.
That does not necessarily mean it is the cheapest in every California ZIP code, but it is often on the shortlist of reputable providers.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Mutual of Omaha is also one of the larger providers of long-term care insurance. The company remained active in this market while many competitors reduced or exited their long-term care offerings. This has given it a reputation as a specialist in that area.

Common Criticisms

No large insurer escapes criticism. The complaints most often heard are:
  • Premium increases on some older policies.
  • Claims processing disputes (which occur at virtually every insurer).
  • Sales practices of independent agents.
  • Long-term care policy rate increases that have affected much of the industry, not just Mutual of Omaha.

Overall Assessment

If I were grading large U.S. insurers on reputation:
CategoryAssessment
Financial StrengthExcellent
Customer ServiceVery Good to Excellent
Life InsuranceExcellent
Medicare SupplementExcellent
Long-Term CareVery Good
Innovation / TechnologyGood
Public ReputationVery Good"

Two of my touchstones are gun control and climate change. Anyone who endorses either doesn't know the constitution nor the state of science today. Climate science is a cruel joke and one that is leading us into an energy drought. The latest idea? Dimming the sun... Image returning to the Ice Ages where temperatures were 10 degrees lower. Canada 20'-300' under ice, oceans 300' lower than now, ditto Alaska. Few crops growing north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Most here would know I don't support either issue. I guess I have never followed the AARP closely, where have they gone on record of supporting or advocating for these issues? I'm not arguing, just want some solid facts before I decide.

Glad to be of service. Simply put, if Wookie is for it, I am not. AARP is all about big Gov and I prefer seeing it shrink. A simple grok search should yield some relevant links as to their positions. Not always the bad guy and definitely the big boy on the senior advocate block, but personally, they are not for me.
