The ACORN thing, on both the housing and the voting, is BS.
We know first hand, having appraised for private sector mortgage brokers, the deregulated guys selling to the deregulated investment banks (now defunct save one), doing subprime lending, that the private companies were the snakes in the grass, not the regulated, commercial banks selling to Fannie and Freddie. In fact, only 1 out of the 25 largest subprime lenders were subject to the low- and moderate-income housing laws and Fannie/Freddie purchases that ACORN is being blamed over (see article below). The mortgage companies that sold to private investment firms started this avalanche and every single one of us who has had a call from the appraiser shopping guy doing "look-ups" knows it.
Also, I know one lender, for a fact, who was bundling to sell to the private sector on the secondary market, but when the crud hit the fan they started retrofitting all their subprime appraisals to be sold to Fannie, who they strong armed into buying at least some of them. How many of us honest appraisers, thinking about these "B" paper companies, lost the work because we noted necessary repairs or appraised the house for what it was REALLY worth? How many of these mortgage brokers fudged numbers on applications to make loans go through? How many of us were asked to "Remove a picture" per the underwriter because it showed a needed repair? We should know better than to be falling for this political hatchet job about ACORN, guys. We were in the front lines. I work for a lot of commercial banks, and not once was I ever pressured, or dropped for stating it like it was. Let's get real.
Further, when it comes to the voting fraud by ACORN, such pronouncements are promoted by media outlets and think tanks trying to sway an election to the republican candidate. It is only believed by people who listen to these outlets and take them at their word, because they don't know how the system works, don't want to look deeper into it, and they trust the biased sources they get their news from (Fox for instance). ACORN hires people at minimum wage who have to meet voting registration quotas to prove they were working the hours they claim. Like any business, you are going to have cheaters. By law, a voter registration card that has been filled out with the aid of a non-profit must be submitted, and it is up to the election committee to determine if it is valid or not. The minimum wage workers to meet their quota made up names (for all we know, some of them could have been young republican operatives, who knows?). ACORN had to submit them. This has ACORN as upset as anyone else. First, it means they paid employees for doing nothing, and second it means that a lot of valid registrations are going to get thrown out because any that look suspiciously inauthentic (even those that are real) will be tossed. Third, it causes a backlog of work to register valid voters, which only hurts voter turnout due to longer lines (trying to find names who have registered but are not on the list). Finally, if rightwing outlets can add to the mess by saying it was all fraud, a lot of people who registered through ACORN, and who are validly registered, may just stay home thinking they are not.
We all know the game. Democrats try to register as many voters as possible, and republicans try to suppress the vote in any way they can. In my area it is required that residents receive voter registration forms in the mail in time to register. We have a republican head of elections. The cut off date for registration was October 6, 2008. All applications must be postmarked by 10/06/2008 in order to be counted. So when did we receive our applications in the mail? On October 6!!! You had to be home, get the letter, fill it out, and get it to the post office before it closed at 4:30 (assuming your mail came before 4:30!) This is all part of the game. You would think that intelligent people on these boards would at least be able to discrimate between real problems and political posturing. Especially on something so well known as voter tactics and even more so when it comes to the mortgage collapse.
