Climate Change Will Reshape Global Economy By Widening Rich-Poor Gap

Breaking news everyone — climate change is serious. Really serious. In fact, a new report suggests that climate change will leave the average income as much as 23 percent lower by the time 2100 hits than it would have been without climate change.

The change in temperature will radically damage the global economy in the next few decades if nothing is done to slow the damage that will be done by climate change. The research itself was published in Nature.

"We're basically throwing away money by not addressing the issue," said Marshall Burke, assistant professor at Stanford University. "We see our study as providing an estimate of the benefits of reducing emissions."

In fact, the effects of climate change on the economy could be far worse than they sound, with the research relying on data from around the world about how temperature can affect productivity. What this means is that the research doesn't even take into account things like the rise in sea levels or any other implications of climate change.

It's important to note that this is not the first study that shows the economic implications of climate change.

The new study breaks productivity down into agriculturally-related and non-agriculturally-related. The effects of climate change on agriculture are easy to explain — crops grow better within a range of temperatures. Not only that, but the productivity of those that work in the fields is lowered when the heat is higher.

The study also highlighted how a rise in temperatures will not affect the world equally. Productivity is at its highest when temperatures are at around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, or 13 degrees Celsius, meaning that in some colder regions productivity may actually be raised. This means that climate change could increase global inequality, with northern, colder countries tending to be better off than tropical countries at this point.

Interesting observation that cooler temperature nations are more productive that warmer temperature nations. That has been the case since 1750, the start of industrialization and man caused global warming. Burning coal gave cooler temperature nations the advantage of increased productivity. It was that evil coal and cooler temperatures that made nations richer. :rof:
 
Science Report: Climate change vs. human activity

Human activity has had at least as much effect as climate change on the survival of animals on the Bahamian island of Abaco, a new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests.

Researchers looked at 10,000-year-old fossils found in an underwater cave on Abaco. They compared them with fossils from the island that date to 1,000 to 3,000 years ago, along with data from current vertebrate populations.

The scientists found that during the last ice age, 17 bird species went extinct on Abaco because of a warming, wetter climate and rising sea levels.

At that time, there were no humans on the island. About 1,000 years ago, the first humans arrived and about 22 species became extinct. The latter species were far more diverse.

The connection is that natural climate change is not a problem but human activity is. Extinction was not caused by CO2 generated by man, but man was the problem a 1000 years ago. Man is the problem today because of CO2 generated by man.

I wonder, maybe man was hungry and had eaten 22 species into extinction? :)

Climate change is a reverse Robin Hood for poor countries

Just when you thought the news about climate change couldn’t get any worse, consider this.

Not only will global warming put a massive dent in the world’s GDP over the coming decades, but it “is essentially a massive transfer of value from the hot parts of the world to the cooler parts of the world,”according to a new study in Nature. “This is like taking from the poor and giving to the rich.”

Researchers Stanford University analyzed 166 countries over a 50-year period (from 1960 to 2010) and compared economic output when country’s experienced normal temperature to abnormally cold or warm temperatures. Controlling for factors such as geography, economic changes, and global trade shifts, they found the optimum temperature where humans are good at producing stuff: 55ºF (13ºC).

Applying this finding to climate change forecasts, they found that 77% of countries will experience a decline in per capita incomes by 2099, with the average person’s income shrinking by 23%. Unusually high temperatures will hurt agriculture, economic production, and overall health, researchers say.

However, some cold countries will benefit hugely, including Mongolia, Finland, Iceland, and Canada. Most European countries will see slight economic gains.





The Middle East, Africa, Asia and South America, where the world’s poorest are concentrated, are expected to be hit hardest by climate change. These countries are either already at or passed the economic Goldilocks temperature, so productivity will only fall as temperatures increase.





By showing how future climate change will cost the global economy, researchers hope policymakers will significantly invest in reducing emissions. World leaders are set to convene in Paris to negotiate an international climate treaty next month. Many have promised to cut emissions, but environmentalists have warned that current pledges aren’t enough to mitigate the worst-case scenario.

I hope all these poor countries get what they want: global cooling. That is the only way to increase their productivity, according to science. :)

7 global warming 'skeptics' who are massively missing the point

Craig Idso is founder and former president of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, which is a non-profit organization that publishes the newsletter CO2Science, which sharply disputes scientific opinion on climate change.

Last year, a recurring face at the annual International Conference on Climate Change, Craig Idso said "There is no dangerous human influence on Earth's climate from a rise in CO2."


Patrick Moore is the former president of Greenpeace Canada, a non-governmental environmental organization that focuses its campaigns on climate change, deforestation, overfishing, and other worldwide issues.

Earlier this year Patrick Moore told Energy Live News "I am firmly of the belief that the future will show that this whole hysteria over climate change was a complete fabrication."

Anastasios Tsonis is a distinguished professor of atmospheric science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee whose research is widely touted by climate-change-denial outlets like Climate Depot.

Anastasios Tsonis has said he's not a climate change denier, but he also is of the belief that Earth is not necessarily getting any warmer. Tsonis is part of a group of scientists who think that Earth's climate flips between a "warm mode" and "cool mode" every 20 to 30 years, driven by oceanic temperatures, particularly the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) current.

Denis Rancourt is a former professor of physics at University of Ottawa who was banned from the university in 2008 for his unconventional approach to teaching and grading.

Despite his training and research in physics, Denis Rancourt calls himself the "Climate Guy" in one of his climate-change-disputing blogs. In 2007, Rancourt published a detailed essay of his opinions that has since served as platform for certain politicians, likeAmerican Senator James Inhofe, to discredit scientific results supporting climate change.

Freeman Dyson is a professor emeritus of the School of Natural Sciences, Institute for Advanced Study. He also holds the prestigious title as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Famed physicist Freeman Dyson has gone on record as a skeptic of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC's) — the internationally accepted authority on climate change — approach on climate change. He's not the only one.

Over a dozen other distinguished scientists, including MIT meteorologist Richard Lindzen, have raised concerns about the predictive power of computer-based climate change models that drive the IPCC's policy guidelines to addressing climate change. Specifically, Lindzen — who has isolated himself from the scientific community — has gone so far as to say that Earth is not sensitive enough to increases in atmospheric CO2 to generate disastrous climate change.

Harrison Schmitt is a geologist, Apollo 17 astronaut, and former Republican US Senator. He's one of many featured on the climate-change skeptics blog, the DeSmogBlog.

Harrison Schmitt was one of 16 scientists to sign in support of a 2012 statement regarding how political candidates should attack the issue of climate change. Among the descriptions in the statement, the most vexing read as follows:

"Speaking for many scientists and engineers who have looked carefully and independently at the science of climate, we have a message to any candidate for public office: There is no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to "decarbonize" the world's economy. Even if one accepts the inflated climate forecasts of the IPCC, aggressive greenhouse-gas control policies are not justified economically."

Steven E. Koonin is a theoretical physicist and director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University.

Steven E. Koonin is what you might call a moderate skeptic. He does not deny the basic facts: Earth's climate is changing and humans play a key role.

However, in a Wall Street Journal editorialin 2014, Koonin voiced concerns that climate change projection models are not sophisticated enough to accurately predict how climate will change over the next 100 years and how humanity will influence that change.

"Society's choices in the years ahead will necessarily be based on uncertain knowledge of future climates," he wrote. Koonin also urged immediate action for an "international commitment" of dedicated, detailed climate observations that would help build better predictive models.

Yeah, and where was man? Burning wood to keep warm. That caused the ice to melt and the world got warmer. :rof:

Climate Change Killed Egypt's Pyramid Builders

“Even the mighty builders of the ancient pyramids more than 4,000 years ago fell victim when they were unable to respond to a changing climate,” said U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt in a press release. “This study illustrates that water availability was the climate-change Achilles Heel then for Egypt, as it may well be now, for a planet topping seven billion thirsty people.”

“Humans have a long history of having to deal with climate change,” said study author Christopher Bernhardt. “Along with other research, this study geologically reveals that the evolution of societies is sometimes tied to climate variability at all scales – whether decadal or millennial.”

Bernhardt drilled into sediments laid down in the Nile Delta to get a record of what plants were growing, or burning, at different times in history. When pollen from water-loving plants decreased, he knew that the actual abundance of vegetation in ancient times had also likely decreased. An increase in charcoal meant that fire was ravaging the land of the pharaohs. A heavy layer of charcoal and thin layer of pollen was a good sign that a massive drought may have occurred.
