I am still not understanding exactly what / how the well is leaking. The gas must be coming up from behind the casing somehow. Otherwise, you simply shut it in at the surface. Then you can run a bridge plug down hole beneath the leak. So if that didn't work, I'm really baffled as to the real source of the leak and all I can think of is maybe earth movement has sheared off the casing at depth. Even then a "squeeze" job usually seals such issues. I guess their only consolation is the price of natural gas is $1.80 or so...and not $11 an MCF like in Europe.

Lets see, at $1.80 for methane, it would be cheaper to light fire to the surface and "flair" it than to chase after the leak for 6 months.

The massive leak amounts to about a quarter of the state’s total output of climate-changing methane. The site is believed to be the largest underground natural-gas storage facility in the West and can hold enough natural gas to fuel Southern California for a month.

So, how about that nuclear power? Non climate changing fuel.

If the gas is diffused, I don't think I want to be the guy with the lighter At certain concentrations (around 10% methane in air) NG is highly explosive. While it likely isn't that concentrated except perhaps close to where it is coming out, then the question is whether the gas is coming out as a distinct plume near or at the wellhead or whether it is diffused over a much wider area... That is a real problem. Wind will help dampen the problem but dead calm nighttimes would be potentially deadly.

They have evacuated 3,000 people all expenses paid to live somewhere else until the leak is fixed. I say light fire to the methane and let her rip.

Having an active methane leak spewing 1,200 tons of methane, along with other gases, daily, is an extreme danger waiting for ignition and inevitable explosion to take it.
