An Idea Whose Time Has Come?

It isn't that I believe it to be a bad idea. I think it's a good idea. I just don't think that as a "group" who isn't officially recognized who is looking for answers from the powers that be will find it extremely difficult getting anything useful out of such a situation.

Sandy,

Anyone who wants to communicate with TAF has a direct line available already. In the six years I served on the ASB we got many comment letters from Forum participants. Some could be counted on to comment on any issue that was exposed. I will not name individuals, but several who participate here have had greate influence on the development of standards and qualifications.

Despite popular belief to the contrary, the name and/or logo on the top of the letter has no bearing on how it is treated. It is the quality of the positions stated in the letter that determine how it is received. A well written letter submitted by an individual is far better that a poorly written letter by a large organization. I know of several USPAP changes that were the result of letters sent by individual appraisers.

When people send questions to the ASB they get answers. They do not always get them as quickly as they want, and often they do not get the answer they want - but they do get answers.

As for the "perspective of those in the trenches," most who serve on TAF boards are working appraisers who are in the same trenches we are.

Regards

DW

Hello Doctor. Hello Doctor. Hello Doctor. Hello Doctor.

Clandestine lurkers need no special communications link.

additionally........this link works fine. john@appraisalfoundation.org

No doubt. I met a long time mover and shaker in our industry last week @ a golf outing. He is well aware of the forum and lurks regularly. He has never posted here. The fact that Mr. Wiley and others post here leave little doubt to the fact that many are quite aware of what goes on in the trenches. The fact that not a whole lot has been done about it is another story and topic for another thread but I don't believe anything is lost on most veterans in the industry.

In 2002 or 2003 the ASB received a letter from an appraiser criticizing the structure of the PREAMBLE. The appraiser went so far as to include a total re-write of this section of USPAP. This was not on the ASB work plan, and no material had been exposed. However, as a result of that individual's letter an Expsoure Draft was issued, and the PREAMBLE was eventually totally re-written.

During the Scope of Work project countless tweaks were made based on individual comments from people who post here regularly.

On the other hand, while I was Chair of the ASB one of the sponsoring oragnizations lobbied particularly hard for some changes to the definitions that were not made. A large software company and a one of the GSEs also found that simply having their name on the letterhead did not mean the ASB would automatically adopt the changes they wanted made.

All comment letters are available to the public. So if someone wanted to research the details they could, but it would take some time.

Having had 2 good friends on the board, I have heard many stories of the lowly independent making a difference. They do listen.

Thank you for your response---- There seems to be so many issues discussed here that the ASB should be responding to in some way--maybe not directly or even officially but all of these issues can't possibly be so off base that they should be ignored!
