The problem is that it will be very hard to find a mentor to take on someone who has not completed the classes.
That's what I was thinking. at least if I was pursuing education it would show I'm taking it serious. I would also feel a lot more comfortable interviewing with at least some basic knowledge.

Wait... What ever happened to the BA degree requirement.
Did they bail on that ?

It's far from Peaches -&- Cream getting started in this business; are you mentally & financially prepared to spend 2,500 hours over a minimum of 2-years, as a trainee at what will look like slave wages?

I have been planning on finishing my bachelors degree no matter what, just because I want to use up my GI Bill money before it runs out. I've worked 60-70 hours a week for the last 3 years on salary. That I can handle the "slave wages" part I can not. If it was just me I could just tighten my belt, but I have a wife and kids.

Your due diligence should include investigating BOTH Commercial and Residential Appraising >> for example:

http://www.dos.pa.gov/ProfessionalL...tifiedRealEstateAppraisers/Pages/default.aspx

http://www1.salary.com/PA/Appraiser-Commercial-Real-Estate-salary.html << based on EXPERIENCE after initial training and requires on-going periodic continuing education to maintain a state certification /license.

Thanks for the info. I need to soak up a lot and make an informed decision.

I'd recommend reaching out to some local appraisers to "get coffee" (or lunch or whatever that might be)

This is definitely not a "quick" field to jump into. No matter what, the MINIMUM experience requirements are 2 yrs (24 months) and that's just for residential - I believe commercial is (still?) 30 months?

As a trainee (the time I just mentioned) you doubtfully would not make anywhere near your current salary of $60k (just honest truth)
This field isn't for everyone and that has nothing to do with pay.
All the best and ... welcome to the Forum!

Thanks, I'll try to find someone in my area to talk to.

John,

Welcome to the Forum. Here is the contact info for the AI in your area. Call them, see if there is an event you can attend, talk to the appraisers, after all, they are the ones working in your market. You want good local information from people who are actually working, appraising in the field. Talk with the AI. if you need help beyond that, message me, I may be able to put you in touch with someone down there.
