Applying To VA Appraiser Panel

Good afternoon,

First post to this forum. I am looking to apply to the VA Panel in the coming weeks, I work in San Diego County. I have gathered several letters of recommendation as required.

My general inquiry was to see if anyone had recently been "accepted" to the VA Panel and when you had applied. I do not know much about the hiring process of the VA. Just looking for current "market conditions" if you will.

Any anecdotal help or evidence would be appreciated

I had applied 3 times and had given up until the VA called me wanting to know if I was still interested in being on the panel They have been adding appraisers to the panel all over the country. Maybe you will get lucky. It is the best thing I have done in many years.

its the greatest appraisal work ever! 3 comps then out the door, none of this active/uc comp 4 & 5 BS which is meaningless.

I applied recently and they denied my application as they said they did not need appraisers in my areas of coverage. They were looking for appraisers in only two counties in my State and I had no experience covering those areas. They said they would keep my application on file for one year and contact me if any openings would come up. After that I would need to re-apply each year.

Tell them you would be willing to do appraisals in one of the two counties that they need appraiser in if they will give you your home county also. That's what I did.

I was accepted roughly 8 months ago
First applied 15 years ago
Reapplied probably 3 more times with the most recent maybe 5 years ago then out of the blue they called me to see if I was still interested.
I am a veteran thought that might help but they do not give that any weight
From what I see they go mainly on years of experience
It seems like they want 20 to 25 years experience minimum

as others have posted the main driving force is their need of appraisers in certain counties. for example the county i live in has an excess of appraisers and i know of one appraiser who has served as a chief for a very large local lender who was denied getting on the panel for years. move one county away and they only have 3 appraisers for all of it (roughly 175,000 population) and can't get anyone to join to take work there.

The VA does not accept appraiser trainee's. You need to be certified. I've been on the VA panel a long time. For some, it's good. For others, they can't stand it. You cannot refuse any request assigned to you. Some properties I appraise should be charged in the $1,000 to $1,500 range but you get nothing near that amount. Some could be completed for $300, and you get more than that. Most of the ones I complete require me to drive a minimum of 100 to 150 miles. No mileage fee for travel. It sort of all evens out at the end of the day.

hmm not the case in my state. more than a few times ive been sent an order where in the notes it says needs to be reassigned as i am only licensed and this sale is over 1 million. so there are licensed VA appraisers out there. that was the plan for my son.
