Appraisal Foundation - Appraisal Standards Board

Assuming Standard 1 compliance based on statements in the report is just weak. It is pointless. I am sure the Standard 3 language is intended to be the way it is. You have said so before.

Maybe with respect to certain omissions in a report, but not to actual errors such as methodology or the math.

If an appraiser identifies or applies the wrong definition of value or doesn't adequately address a valuation scenario that wouldn't be a typo or omission.

Ima get a ton of hate for this but I'm going to run my mouth anyway because this forum is going to look like idiots if we let these ideas pass without challenge.

I highly disappointed that there are still appraisers out there - after all these many years and after all those USPAP courses that they take every 2 years - who actually think TAF is about anything other than appraiser qualifications and appraisal standards and (to a lesser degree) the functional elements of appraising. It's even more disappointing that people might think the ASB (in particular) is about anything other than the material in USPAP. Whoever these two have been taking their USPAP courses from have apparently been slacking, and that's another disappointment.

The fundamental lesson of the AQBs USPAP Instructor Course is that instructors need to stick to the script and to not inject into the instruction elements which are not there. That's an *explicit* violation of the contracts they sign for which they can lose their certifications to teach those courses. It's also a violation of the ETHICS RULE, because teaching appraisal courses is considered an element of appraisal practice as defined. This will go double for the ASB members as they promulgate USPAP. Apart from providing instruction to the state boards on what USPAP is/isn't it's none of the ASBs business how these boards conduct their affairs. It says so right in the book:

"USPAP does not establish who or which assignments must comply. Neither The Appraisal Foundation nor its Appraisal Standards Board is a government entity with the power to make, judge, or enforce law."

There's nowhere in USPAP that makes any reference to licensing or state boards or discipline protocols or E&O or anything even remotely related to those topics. If either of these two knew what they were talking about in terms of the material they'd know this much because it's basic. Basic.

If you guys want Mr Turner's application to go anywhere then the best note you could send would be to Phil to persuade him to pull this episode of his podcast before the Board of Trustees at TAF sees it; because if they see it then that will be it for Mr Turner's application. Being incompetent with the material is not a good look.

Ok. Who is arguing with you? Certainly not the interview. You turning over leaves trying to find a fight? Come to a TAC meeting. Bring your buddies. You’ll get it.

Well, apparently those who participated in the interview did not understand the "basics" that George outlined. If those participants did understand, then why was the interview, an interview supposedly in support of an ASB appointment, focused on matters that are outside of the ASB's authority? Why did they talk so little about the kinds of things that the ASB actually does?

Really? Please expound on what the mission statement and purpose of the ASB is.

From the Appraisal Foundation website:

Appraisal Standards Board
Under the provisions of Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA), the Appraisal Standards Board (ASB) is responsible for writing, amending, and interpreting the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The ASB issues Exposure Drafts on proposed changes to USPAP and obtains feedback at public meetings throughout the year in various regions of the country. Additionally, the ASB occasionally issues USPAP Q&As and participates in speaking engagements on request.

The ASB is composed of five to nine members who are appointed by the BOT and may serve up to eight years. Activities of the Board are directed by the Chair, who is appointed by the BOT for a one-year term.

What did Wiley have to say about it during his three terms as Chair?

Those arguing with DW are like the guy who asked Brad Pack who he thought he was in debating any given FHA question.

The mission of the Appraisal Foundation is to advance the valuation profession by setting standards of excellence, promoting education and upholding the public trust.

You have a problem? Your barking up the wrong tree. Your clueless.

I can’t help people who don’t want to help themselves. Just read.

The mission of the ASB is just as described in every USPAP course :) Or, as demonstrated, it can be found on the TAF web site.

Is it too much to expect that one applying for a job knows what the job is? Is it too much to expect one who is "endorsing" someone for a job to have the same knowledge? Is it too much to expect the person doing the endorsing to know what the letters A, S, and B, actually stand for? Is that expecting too much? Dr. Phil is usually much better; I was surprised that this was botched so badly. Perhaps it was just a setup for a second episode.

If I were considering applicants to the ASB, I would be far more interested in the content of the comment letters they had submitted on Exposure Drafts than the content of podcasts and/or letter writing campaigns. As I said before, there is a reason that we have not seen such "campaigns" in the past.

One more and I may be out. See, AI and TAF had a falling out. I worked for a MAI for years and he was distraught with AI the whole time. His complaining kept me from pursuing a designation. He was good. Really good. His daddy owned the biggest railroad tie producing company in the world ever.

His resume was like who’s who. It was crazy.
