Don't send any politicians here. It would give 'em just the stuff they like to use so they can avoid the hard work and decision making that Congress and the legislatures must get on with. In another life I once lobbied in Washington. A senator said "If you guys would just agree on what you want, I'd help you." We didn't and he couldn't.

Now, that's a good argument for not inviting them. I just couldn't buy the notion that the forum as a whole represented a significant affront to their sensibilities.

Most yearly membership is roughly the cost of 1 appraisal. I don't think $400 is not going to make or brake you. If one cannot afford a membership to an organization, well there not making much of a living to begin with. Believe me, this is comming from someone that is at the bottom half of the average income for an appraiser.

My opinion is that all organizations have done a very poor job in promoting the residential appraiser. But, it will not change unless me, you and others start speaking up at meetings and do something about it. Thus this the primarly the reason I joined and decided that I will start to get active in NAIFA. (Just recd my designation in Dec 04).

Additionally an unwritten benefit of the being designated, (in whatever organization) is that if a member needs to refer an assignment to another appraiser, they will recommend one of their own.

One thing I would like to see is a survey of income on what the average designated appraiser makes and what the non designated appraiser makes.

I would be willing to bet the designated appraiser makes more money than the non designated.

Roger,

That was my not my immediate thougth, but it did come quickly after my overreaction to Mary's broad brush insult. If she had said dont invite a habit of Nuns I would have been more understanding and have let it go. We cant change what has already happened. Using her logic, the pot is already spoiled and there is no fixing it. In other words this is nothing but an academic drill and a waste of time.

My mistake was simple, I should have PM'd her and requested she edit her post. Failing that I should have PM'd my favorite moderator, Mother Superior, and ask her to see what she could do.

I apologize to the Forum. I'll try and be nice and not sweat the small stuff.

The troubling aspect of this thread is easy to see. You can not seek answers via observations from ones perspective. I dont expect begging. I would and should expect positive reinforcement of there organizations.

Turning it back on non-members by asking "Why should you not be affiliated?" is a fair question. They just have it backwards, they should be answering that question for us! the why is simple, they have the perspective of both sides. Then they will have advanced there cause in a positive manner.

I've been reading this thread and now I'm going to try to be objective about what has been said. Here is the attempt anyway. I have to condense the statements above a lot and no doubt something was said that is an exception to what I am concluding. So much for CYA.
We SFR appraisers contributing to this thread have the primary complaint that we are under attack, we are loosing the battle and our livelihoods and the orgs are not doing anything about it and may, in fact, be joining the enemy. AVM's and Skippies are taking our business. Mortgage lenders are absolutely enamored with AVM's and Skippies (cheap & fast) and we are convinced we appraisers can give them a more accurate and reliable appraisal. And we are concerned about enforcement of USPAP and its application to the problem.
The orgs also promote appraisal quality and the applicability and enforcement of USPAP, therefore, we deduce, the orgs should be concerned about ensuring our continued economic viability.
I was demonstrating with the crowd bad mouthing the orgs, but with this analysis I'm not sure that my business is their business.
At the seminar I attended last week a laundry list of the commonly accepted characteristics of a profession was mentioned. Appraising doesn't fulfill the list in several respects, but one that applies here is that a profession generally is represented by one voice. Now which org will ultimately represent us if we are to fulfill that parameter of professional identification might make an interesting opportunity for an odds maker, but in the meantime we need to decide if what we want the orgs to do is to prohibit lenders from using AVM's and Skippies in SFR's.
