Black couple settle lawsuit as home value at $500k below real price

If I recall correctly, several people from here read the lawyer statements for Miller saying that they were sharp as a tack and Bulldogs.

It appears they folded like a deck of cards....
Plaintiffs probably had almost endless money and were dragging it out. It had already been years and they didn't even get to discovery.

I am speculating that a trial would have been long and arduous, not to mention very expensive. The court of public opinion will probably never be on Miller's side. It sounds like by settling and getting what looks like a slap on the wrist, it was the best possible outcome. (Although watching that excretable movie is a pretty big punishment) People wonder all the time why people settle court cases if they are not guilty. Mostly because you want it over with and to get on with your life. You make a calculated decision to move on.
The optics definately look better for the plaintiff. The appraiser must not of known better because all appraisers are racist, we want her to watch this documentary to help her out. We are not trying to be punitive, we just want to draw attention to this.

Yes the optics and public opinion favor plantiff. Could have been different if Trump was still President.
I recorded on demand the documentary but never had chance to watch it. It's not really a punishment to watch it.

This is true racism - Asians are lumped with "white privilege" - only a problem in "Woke" states.

Think about doctors. If you know nothing about a couple doctors and one has a harder time getting into college (has to perform better) based on their skin color and one can get in easily based on their skin color which would you choose if you knew nothing else about them? Yes its possible the one with the skin color that would automatically be admitted could be a better doctor but the odds are against it. If I were to pick one based on their Indian or Asian decent it doesn't mean I'm some Indian or Asian supremacist.

When I go into someone's house doing appraisals, I always want to set a rapport not to offend the owner.
Miller may have given a bias attitude which the occupant/owner felt. It's part of the business in not getting the owner upset.

When I appraise a lower income area, I talk with the occupant and they ask me questions like where I live.
I'm ashamed to tell them where I live (high income area) and I would compliment their area in some way. I know the towns and there always something good to say about each town.
I would even say I bought first house in that area and later I moved.
Willow Avenue is not a high income area, it's a average minus quality tract. Cut the bs.

Just curious...

How do you know an area is "lower income" when you appraise properties therein?

How do you know your area is a "high income area"?

You know the incomes of all in those areas?

I would think typically based on the price range of the homes. It could be a bit different in areas with older homes that are passed down.

Looking back....
Especially after the Miller case and the comments from forumites....
I feel fortunate to have started out as a bank staff appraiser (1987) and the banks' in-house Fair Lending training and seminars....
Thought it was a waste of time then....
Seems I was wrong....

Being a doctor is very rigorous requiring years of schooling and training. Doesn't matter the race. Those who can survive the grueling process of getting med school then accepted into residency and passing the medical test are qualified to be a Doctor.
My wife was asking such a question regarding your post and I was cringing to what my daughter's medical school boyfriend was going to say. He was so politically correct that he passed my test. He's worthy to be my daughter's partner (as she would call him).
