Dave:
As you know, I am more than casually familiar with the Disto products... ;-) If you are going to be getting a new unit, and if you do NOT need/want Bluetooth, you should write Matt and ask if he can get the Hilti PD-42. I happen to like that model over the A5. I have not personally used the newest Disto D3 (http://tinyurl.com/yp29hv) but since it does not have a scope, I'm not imagining it to be a viable replacement for those who need the scope. Still, I'm going to get one for my own personal use/testing. Wonder if Matt will let ME do the "Disto Trade Up" thing I see offered? LOL
Anyway. take a look at the Hilti PD-42. I'm pretty impressed with it. I believe it is available for something like $20 or $30 more than an A5, but I find it easier to use for longer distances. I am, of course, biased toward Bluetooth units, but if you're not using this function, the A5 or PD-42 is the way to go. FWIW, used Disto Plus models still carry a premium in the used market in some parts of the world. Heavy users still prefer the way it works over the smaller, but (for them) less functional A6...
Just my 2¢...
