Forget the political angle. I don't think companies are moving due to politics, per se. I think they're moving for economic reasons, to which the politics can contribute but which also include other considerations. WRT Silicon Valley in particular I think housing prices for the workers are definitely a factor. The ratio of highly paid vs moderately paid workers in a tech firm have to be relatively low, so whether the few can fully enjoy the coastal lifestyle or not it ultimately matters what the lower paid workers can afford.

If you're a $100k/yr tech worker and can barely afford to rent a 2bd apt in the town where you work you might have aspirations of owning your own home that won't be possible to achieve in Silicon Valley. At that point those $300k starter homes on the south side of Austin might provide a strong motivation to relocate.

Young people here are very resourceful. They rent out rooms in big house sharing kitchen and bathrooms. Big house across street is rented to millenials. I have an rental where 3 people share the rents.
Young people are not thinking of raising family. Living here within their means is sufficient for time being.

Those aren't the people I was referring to. I was referring to people who have actually outgrown their extended adolescence and have formed long term relationships and (gasp) even had kids. Whether they did that when they were 26 or 46 makes no difference. Most people aren't going to see couch surfing to be a desirable lifestyle as they get older.

Most young techies are not into buying a house and heaven forbid, maintain it.
They can rent and move around where the young people likes..
By the time they're ready to settle down and starta family (so many distractions), they're generally older.
Unfortunately, not many "old" techies in fast changing industry work in the business.

They could just not sell to California or pass the tax on to the California buyers. How does that help?

California has created the homeless problem and never done anything to help them except line local and State politicians pockets , they get a $3,000,000 grant and that POS Garcetti sets up a 10 person Blue Ribbon Committee to study why people homeless. Then after they blew through the $3,000,000 they show up at another place asking for more money. Kinda like the Billion dollar High speed train that is stuck and now will be a low to no speed train. Californians have become dumber and dumber, by the day.
