China threatens to retaliate against countries that strike trade deals with Trump

China has warned countries against striking trade deals with the U.S. at its expense to secure relief from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, threatening retaliation against those that do.

As the trade war between the world’s two largest economies escalates, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce promised to retaliate against any country that reaches an agreement with the U.S. that limits its trade with China. The U.S. tariffs against other countries are economic bullying, the ministry said in a statement attributed to an unnamed spokesperson, translated by the Associated Press.

“China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests,” the Chinese government said Monday.

Trump is waiting for countries to negotiate a trade deal. Now they won't.
China in essence is saying if you enter a deal with US, you will get same tariffs imposed on US.
Vietnam was so eager to negotiate. Not anymore since Vietnam has closer relationship with China.
Trump better call Xi and find a way to end this nonsense tariffs.
If Trump doubles down, world will have a global trade war and for sure a Depression will come.

Why China has warned countries against ‘appeasing’ Trump in trade deals

How dependent is the world on Chinese exports?

In a report published in January by the Lowy Institute, a Sydney-based think tank, analysts found that in 2023, about 70 percent of countries imported more from China than they did from the US.

China’s rapid ascent as a trading superpower can be traced back to 2001, the year it joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) and when it started to dominate global manufacturing after years of successful protectionist industrial policies.

During the 2000s, China benefitted from the relocation of international supply chains, turbocharged by substantial inflows of foreign investment, large pools of low-cost labour and an undervalued currency exchange rate.

By 2023, China had become the largest trading partner for at least 60 countries, almost twice as many as for the US, which remained the largest trading partner for 33 economies.

The gap between them is also widening in many countries: The Lowy Institute analysis found that in 2023, 112 economies traded more than twice as much with China as they did with the US, up from 92 in 2018 during Trump’s first trade war.

“The critical dependence China has developed around the world, especially in Asia, means that lots [of trading partners] cannot do without China,” said Alicia Garcia-Herrero, an economist at the investment bank Natixis. “From critical minerals to silicon chips, Chinese exports are almost irreplaceable.”

Can countries afford to alienate China on trade?

According to Garcia-Herrero, a few countries such as Mexico that have particularly deep trade links with the US, probably will “say no to Chinese imports”.

However, she highlighted that “China’s presence in supply chains is so massive for most of America’s other trade partners, decoupling is virtually impossible.”

Indeed, around the world, China has become an invaluable source of imports. The European Union, for instance, had a trade deficit with China worth 396 billion euros ($432bn) in 2022, up from 145 billion euros ($165bn) in 2016.

China accounts for 20 percent of EU goods imports. The equivalent figure in Great Britain is 10 percent. Last week, Treasury Secretary Rachel Reeves said it would be “very foolish” for the UK to engage in less trade with China.

Across the developing world, China’s trade role is just as crucial. Roughly a quarter of Bangladesh’s and Cambodia’s total imports are from China. Nearly a fifth of Nigeria’s and Saudi Arabia’s goods imports come from China.

“Trump’s trade policy is shortsighted,” Garcia-Herrero said. “Trying to pry trade away with China may work in countries where the US has military bases. … They may have to accept the US’s concerns.”

“But for most countries, particularly those in the Global South, the more that Trump threatens, the more that countries will go on China’s side.”

I told you trade war is nasty. Especially with China. Just wait if Trump don't chill.

I have seen small businesses on local news already crying. I can only imagine nationwide impacts.

I told you a long time ago a trade war is a war we can't win. I stand my ground. If you can understand free trade and economics, you will agree we can't win.

We lost the battle before we started the battle.

Don't pick a fight you can't win in economics. Called stupid.

Stupid is predicting the outcome, before the outcome, based on 1 item. SO what war are you willing to do to win the future of this country for your children. Or just keep going and leave your children a bankrupt government and country. I also don't think that more countries want to be under more control by china. We will see chicken little Zoooe.

Oh China dearest, please, please, pleazzzzze take all our money.

I thought the current administration had already determined the tariff war outcome 100%; success....

Similar to Dubya administration 100% determining the outcome of the Afghan & Iraq wars....
Open arms to the conquering invaders....

I have to believe in 2001 and 2003....
Many of you were big f'ing supports of those successful wars....
Look how much those 2 wars saved our children & grandchildren....

Why initiate a war if you don't believe you will be victorious and also remain whole....

I wouldn't say China won the trade war - but it delivered a blow to Trump, who thought nations would quake and cave just because he opened his fat mouth and threatened (or enacted ) tariffs. The world is giving him the finger on it, essentially. What kind of idiot alienated our long-term allies and neighboring nations?

China and other enemy states are gloating and feeding off the chaos, financial loss and embarrassment of Trump's foolish bluster and threats - his own party is pee in pants scared due to threat of piramy but as Trumps approval rating slips they may be less so. Still, it is unknown if they can stand up to his terrible ideas and will to spend and add to the debt , which other nations understand makes us extremely vulnerable.

China cannot boycott the world. It will crush their economy. These are all idle threats. Behind the scenes they are negotiating.

Despite the chickenhearts hand wringing, talks are progressing. An agreement with India is near as is Japan, the latter especially starting to feel the heat. China has blown it by threatening their neighbors, revealing their vunerability and anxiety behind the curtain. Pedal to the metal.
