It really opens a whole nother world when you give it permission to create/modify files on it's own.

You can try WSL2 if you want to dabble in linux or if you've got a beefy enough pc, use virtualbox to create a second windows instance.

Are you letting claude run wild in your file system or are you sandboxing it somehow?

I would advise never to let Claude "run free". It can erase your databases and other files if it misinterprets your intentions or the context. It can easily do a lot of damage in a split second. You, unfortunately, need to give it commands like "do not erase any files without my explicit permission." Unfortunately, this will slow up things and demand, on your part, constant attention to what it is doing - unless you are absolutely sure you have set sufficient guardrails to prevent it from causing damage, that it has acknowledged these guardrails several times over and written them down its memory, i.e. markdown files in the project or profiles or both. EVEN SO, it can still screw up and just tell you "I'm sorry .....".

I'd prob get myself into trouble if I tried at this point I've got a long way to go but love reading about you guys and what you do. I've got a 5080gpu which barely has enough VRAM to do what I want (free uncapped video generation vs Grok) but it's going to have to do. 5090's are nuts

Apple Mac Studio Ultra prices have increased significantly - and you can't even get more than 96G of memory - unless you pay a big, big premium on price from some 3rd party vendor.

I wanted to get the Apple Mac Studio M5 Ultra when it comes out, but now it doesn't look good. It is unlikely to come with 512 GB of memory. ChatGPT said it predicts I will be better off keeping my M2 Ultra as my main desktop and building my own Linux Nvidia computer when the time comes. ... I now. presume that will be the case. This old Apple Mac Studio M2 Ultra is going to be my main computer for another 3-4+ years it looks like. When I need to start doing heavy neural network coding, it will probably be on the cloud for the first year or two. Then we will see.

I've never owned an apple computer although the very first video game on PC I played was on a Mac something about climbing ladders like a green screen or green ladders where you just climbed. Anyway, what I've learned is that I think I posted this somewhere else paying for AI if you are a decent user You are heavily subsidized. I have a beast of a gaming PC which is right up video generations alley and it is literally azz at what I've been doing lol. Can basically make 3 second 9:16 videos in 720p that look decent. The most I can get is a 10 second video generation and that's downgrading to a lower model. It's a fun experiment and I will go through with it and see what the final result is but basically grock is the way to go for video generation that is not heavily censored like Gemini which is all but useless. Chad GPT will make you any image you want but I don't even think they have video yet or at least I haven't looked too much into it because groc is the only one that works so far in making 20 second stitched videos. Supposedly by the end of the year they will make entire full-length movies

Well honestly think the future is going to be a mix of subscription and self hosted AI so don't give up on it. Use claude/chatgpt/gemini tokens sparingly for complex tasks and offload the basic stuff to a simple local model.

I'm lucky I got my Apple Mac Studio M2 Ultra in 2023. A used Mac Studio M2 Ultra costs about as much as they did new. Apple is completely out of refurbished Mac Studios, even old ones. And if you want to buy a used Mac Studio M2 Ultra, you need to get AppleCare+ insurance - but you are not likely to get that unless you buy it from Apple. So, basically getting an M2 Ultra or M3 Ultra now, is nearly impossible. - At the minimum, you will have to stand in line, and even if you do, don't expect to get more than 96G of RAM after waiting several months.

Oh, you can find used Mac Studio Ultras - but not from Apple. If they have problems, it will cost you a fortune to get them fixed, without AppleCare+.

So, I have to be REAL careful to keep my AppleCare+ up-to-date.

I find this so hard to believe. ...

HOWEVER, if you spend a lot of money on hardware now, it is probably going to be out of date in 2 years, maybe even in 1 year. It is best to get something like a Mac-Mini M5 and connect to Claude - if you ask me. Wait for the hardware situation to stabilize before investing $10K+ in your next machine.
