I pretty much just do residential appraisals. I was given an A6 Disto as a gift and am trying to figure it out. (Since it was a gift, and was pretty expensive, I'm trying to see if I should let them send it back. I don't want a nice gift like this sitting in my desk collecting dust and she only has a limited amount of time to send it back.) I am fairly computer litterate, and have decent math skills but the manual I recieved with the tool seems somewhat basic. What i have figured out so far is that to shoot an exterior wall dimension basically you shoot two triangles back to back and get the base length.

Here are my main questions. Apparently you can take measurments and send it directly to Apex or whatever drawing program. 1) Where do you learn how to do this? It is definitely not in the manual I received. 2) Can you make adjustments to the drawing once you get back to the office? Let's be honest here, as accurate as you try to be when you sketch at an inspection, you may be an inch or two off on one side or the other and have to adjust. 3) What program do you have to have to get the dimensions from the A6 to Wintotal or Apex? 4) Red glasses- If it is sunny you need to wear red glasses? 5) Tripod- If I hold the A6 the same place on my chest everytime I shoot is a tripod necessary? etc... I hate to sound like I am not capable of figuring out problems on my own but when you talk to Leica tech support about these questions they do help but on some they are a little vague. Example- Yes you can get the dimentions into Apex. Ok, so how do you do that? And then they can't tell you etc... I really want this to work, I just need a little assistance if anyone has any advice I sure would appreciate it.

CSR,

Hopefully I can help a little here.

The A6 is essentially an A5 with Bluetooth capability built-in. You can use an A6 just like an A5 but if you have a device (i.e. Pocket PC, SmartPhone, Tablet PC, etc.) with Bluetooth also, you can "pair" it with the DISTO A6 to send the measurements and line direction to a device with an appropriate version of Apex loaded on it. From reading between the lines, it seems likely that you have a version of Apex loaded on your computer. It is likely the desktop version - i.e. Apex v3 or Apex v4 (aka "Medina') - and while Bluetooth support is built into all Apex programs, it is not exposed (available) in the desktop versions since it is unlikely that you'd take a desktop computer out into the field to measure anything, LOL. To get to the Bluetooth connection in Apex, you simply need a mobile version...

If you will send me your contact info, I can arrange to get you a document which walks you through the set-up and/or I can get you set up with a (free) webinar session so you can watch (and participate if desired) how this stuff works.

As for some of your other questions:

1.) Covered in the foregoing
2.) Yes, you can make adjustments to the drawing either in the field or once back to the office.
3.) You'd use Apex to get the drawing and calculations back to the report, just as you do now.
4.) Some people find the red glasses useful for certain situations, but mostly people end up learning "DISTO measuring tricks" pretty quickly and the glasses end up staying in the car...
5.) I assume you are referring to the triangulation or "Pythagoras" function. This feature is rarely used by practiced appraisers. When necessary, however, the "trick" is to pivot the device. If you hold it against your chest and turn your whole body, you are moving the point of measurement too much. Some folks simply put their index finger on the tripod mount "screw hole" and pivot the device. Sorry for the poor description.

Here is a link to a short (old) video illustrating how MobileSketch works. This program may or may not be the desired program for you, depending on your circumstance(s) and preferences, but at the approx. 3:40 mark of the 5 minute video, it shows how the sketch drawn on-site in whatever version you use is transferred into your existing desktop version of Apex. Thus, you may edit, modify or whatever as desired.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you'd like more info or want to do a webinar and watch, ask questions, etc. In the interim, I will look for more information, links, etc. I can send you. Again, sorry this is so poorly written - I am away from my desk at the moment and responding via wireless mobile device.

Any chance you guys make a MobileSketch app for Iphone?

Mr. Garrett I sent you a p.m. I really appreciate the info so far....

Upfront, I'm just trying to make it VERY clear before I start asking a bunch of questions and sound like someone that doesn't like figuring things out on their own, let me explain that I did not go buy the A6 on a whim and then decide to do research. I did not even know what an A6 was. (I did know there were measuring tools available.) It was given as a gift and the giver only has a reasonable amount of time to return it if it is not going to work for me. It seems like it could really be helpful, but I don't know anyone that has one, so I have no one to ask except you guys. When I call the website she got it from the people that answer are sales people and know nothing about the unit.

So I see OminusRun talking about mobile skecth. What exactly does one have to have to be able to perform a mobile sketch. If I have a laptop without an air card but with bluetooth can I just transfer the info from my A6 to my laptop once I get back to my house or office or is that something that you do one measurement at a time?

If I'm going to have to buy another couple of hundred $$ worth of software/tools etc.. for this to work it would really help me if I new what to get etc...

Mr. Garrett. I watched the vidoe you sent me. What device was that video shot on. Was that a phone, a tablet PC etc.. I hate to sound like I'm from the stone age and actually consider myself somewhat tech savy but all this is really new to me.

In short, any info that anyone feels like sharing with me would really be appreciated.

CSR,

Sorry for the delay in responding - I am away at the moment and without reliable Internet access, but I will respond in more detail when I can.

Short answers on the device the video was shot on. That video is very old and was done on a generic, low resolution Pocket PC. Today's SmartPhones have better screens and do more things better than the old Pocket PC's. If you have a Pocket PC now, send me the model and I'll let you know if it will work for MobileSketch. If you do not have one now and want to look at some recommended units, let me know and I'll send you some info.

Hope this helps for now.

OminusRun,

MobileSketch was originally written for the Windows Mobile OS environment and does not run on an iPhone. We later released it for "Touch Tablets" but neither version has been updated in a while. We are certainly not "anti-iPhone" - there just has not been sufficient requests for an iPhone version to date. Most users simply prefer a device with a larger screen. Still, if there is interest, we'll certainly consider it.

Again, sorry this is so brief - I am on a limited satellite connection at the moment. I am happy to discuss this at more length if desired once I get back to a desktop environment.

ThaNKs for the input. Basically I can't connect the data from the A6 to my laptop and dont have a pocket pc. i think i will just keep it and in the future I will purchase a pocket pc and have the capabilities to sync. Anybody want to offer any tips or suggestions for usage? All help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

I have the D5 and rarely end up just using the Disto alone for a job if it is not a condo because I find that I am spending more time trying to keep the dot on a small target than it takes just to measure the strait shot of a garage. All that technology is great, but are you really saving time figuring out how to get this this thing to download a final sketch when doing a quick drawing on a piece of paper and manually adding a sketch would probably be quicker inthe long run. I do love not having to deal with thorny bushes or hard to access areas, so I do take it with on every job and almost always use it for part of the work.

As the saying goes "The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the toilet"

Just my two cents worth
