Is it acceptable to dress in a T, shorts, and sandals while performing an inspection? Consider the borrower who is often in pajamas or work out cloths when showing their home.

If that passes as "business casual" in your neck of the woods, be my guest. :)

In general, I would think that such attire would not be appropriate unless one was delivering pizzas to the house.

Slacks and a knit shirt all year.

Be professional, dress professional and get more respect. Dress slacks, nice top, dress coat, my daughter who is also a appraiser had a guy show up at her house last year in a big huge pickup, loud mufflers, screeched to a stop in her driveway wearing army camouflage pants, black t-shirt and flip flops. Not only was he bad looking so was the appraisal....LOL

Maybe Billie from Vexcon was doing side work. :rof:

I have seen appraisers dress like:

A business person in a suit and tie

Shorts, sandals(flip flops), ball cap and torn shirt

Larry the Cable Guy

Joe the plumber

And a wide assortment of other methods.

I was discussing the possibility of a young lady who was interested in being an appraiser, who came to see me in my office yesterday. She is smart, well dressed, well educated,(4 year degree in business), and has a background as an insurance claims adjuster. I helped her form a plan to get her trainees license, get the required pre licensure courses, and find a place that might assist her in getting the experience she will need.

She will likely be successful. Then I thought about the last big year in the number of persons interested in getting into appraising, which was 2007 prior to the new requirements of 2008. It is very likely that less than 10% of those people will ever see an appraisers license.

Some were dressed like escapee's from a rag factory. Some were better suited to be tattoo artist as they were covered with same. Some were not as well dressed as Larry The Cable guy. Maybe, just maybe 10% were dressed well enough that I would have allowed them to come into my home.

Think about who you would let into your home, and consider if the appraisers you know dress at least that well. I am sure that will vary by location, local norms, etc. But that would be my standard before I would allow someone with a clipboard and a camera into my home, taking pictures and poking into every area of my home, things I would not ordinarily allow one to do without a search warrant.

This topic generates a lot of varying opinions - slobs to snobs, I suppose - but this is probably the most cogent statement of a reasonable standard of dress I've seen in this forum.
