We are selling our house and we are supposed to close next week friday. We were not informed about the appraiser needing to go into the crawl space due to being an FHA appraisal, well last week friday we found out everything appraised fine, but there is a condition on them getting into the crawl space, which was screwed shut, we went and opened it up on saturday. On monday they ordered the appraisal again, and now it is friday again and still no news. We literally have one week left before the closing date. How long do they usually take to get this stuff done?
I assume it's not OK for me as the seller to reach out to the appraiser to see if they can give me a timeframe.

Not really, but your agent can contact the buyers agent and see if they con prod things along as well as the buyer contacting their lender to see when a re-inspection can be scheduled.

He has been in touch with them, and he was able to confirm it was ordered this past Monday. But at this point we are just basically waiting for it to happen. I am not sure how long things take in a case like this.

The ball is in the buyer's court. They are the ones that have the leverage with the lender. Just because an order was initiated, that does not mean that the appraiser was contacted as of yet. Have the buyer press for more details.

Good to know, It's so hard to get the full picture when there are so many pieces involved. I don't want to drive me realtor crazy, but at the same time I am the one that will be paying two mortgages if we don't close before the end of the month, since we already moved to a new home.

And I'll add to Howard's comments that there may be another player involved, an AMC (Appraisal Management Company) between the buyer, lender and appraiser. It is quite possible that the appraiser does not even know about the "new" assignment

Another issue may be the appraiser's availability to actually get to your property.

That is what they are getting paid for. I'm sure they'd be happy to assist in getting more detailed info to insure a timely closing.

Is there a possibility that the appraiser took some vacation time the week they decided to order it, I know being summer in New England, this is a big vacation time for everyone here.

Howard I am sure he would like to be done with this house for sure, we had the first offer fall through, and now we are having this delay with the second buyer. I wish I would have known the crawl space inspection was necessary for the appraisal, but nobody told us. We would have made sure it was accessible.

That crossed my mind too.
