How do you guys normally measure a stair-like this?

The area of both stair treads and landings proceeding to the floor below is included in the finished area of the floor from which the stairs descend.

Since it is curved I would guesstimate the area of the stairs.

No grasshopper.
You must measure accurately.
Or not at all.
I pick the latter.

It's up there with pool. Put a label to show where it be, and done.
Unless you want to draw curving staircases, and put in little pool icons.
Don't forget to label the Superfluous. :leeann2:

From #9 above:
"However, the area of
both stair treads and landings proceeding to the floor
below is included in the finished area of the floor
from which the stairs descend
, not to exceed the
area of the opening in the floor."

From that, I'd suggest that the stairs need to be measured, and the area of them included in the area of the upper level. The area of the level to which the stairs descend is included in the area of that level.. Commonly use sketching software will calculate the area of irregular shape: were I to have that challenge, I'd put a note somewhere in the discussion of improvements if there were some uncertainty or insecurity about the accuracy of the calculation of the stair's area.

(I learned doing litigation work that the other side's lawyer didn't have to disprove my value - all she had to do was find an error and establish that my work wasn't credible because of mistakes. But then I'm sorta' a dinosaur.)

LOL WHY on earth would you be measuring the stairs?? LOL Seriously? Who taught you that?

Sometimes I don't want to double count and I may take out the interior stairway if I feel like it.
Do you wear a mood ring on your inspections? Do you document the color of said ring in your workfile? Do you have a list of medications you are currently on in there as well? As your attorney I would want to know exactly how you're feeling and why as you gathered your field data. At least that would be some support, "Mood Ring Turquoise – not GLA"

The classes we all took back in 1996-1997 for continuing education, that's when the ANSI Standards for calculating GLA were established.

Did the builder build the stairs? Is there some other way to account for the area of the stairs?
