How to access county records

Appraiser in training here. I am helping with an assignment. What do you do when County records are not online, as such? Is there a vendor we can go to that actual deeds, transfers, deed of trust papers can be viewed? The County in question - Marin County, CA only has summary information - parties, and tax amount. Probably the sale amount can be reverse calculated from the tax amount in most cases. Each document must be purchased for $8 (and you don't really know which ones you really need before seeing them)
Not to change the subject, but do you have a supervisor yet? Or are you getting your hours via PAREA?

You do what we did when there were no... or only very few... county records on line. You get in your car and drive to the county offices and get copies and/or make notes.
