Should be a work/analysis completed fee. I'd bet these AMCs have it in their engagement they won't pay a dime. I would look over them and say that was unacceptable that I could do work and not get paid if they cancel last minute, and they said ok and moved on to not want me. They must get a lot of suckers to work for them.

The solution is to require a retainer and I bet there is not one single AMC who would pay a retainer. I get retainers for any large project where I don't know the people.
