The Illinois law on smoke detectors requires that the landlord supply and install the detectors in rented properties. It also requires that the tenant maintain and replace the batteries.
The new CO law requires the CO detectors in ALL homes with gas burning appliances, stove, furnace, fireplace. Not just rental properties.
We own a few apartments which are included in a rental subsidy program.
Our experience has been that the tenants remove the batteries because when they burn the toast, or hamburger, or when they smoke the detectors do what they are supposed to do.
Fortunately, all our units are all electric.
