Illinois Is A God Forsaken Place

returned to see the old farm
My great-aunt stayed in my grandparents home while her husband went to California and he found a job at Long Beach in the oil fields. Moms cousins didn't return to Arkansas to visit until the 60's & 70's. They wanted to see the old house which was abandoned but still standing. One said, "My Gawd Maggie, it shrunk." As a little girl she remembered it as much larger. I doubt it was over 800 SF with an attic room.

Shout out for SIU Carbondale.
My alma mater.
Bradley in Peoria was also a party school, in my day.
Transferred outta there. Caterpillars, Eeek. :leeann2:

Went to college in Elgin. Lived in Chicago Gold coast area (corner of Oak & Rush) for 3 years after that. Fun city...as long as you stayed in your area. It's cleaned up a lot since then (80's). No more Cabrini–Green, etc

1980's verses Today photos of Cabrini-Green

Grew up in the northwestern burbs that butt up against the city. It was great and we'd ride our bikes to Fullerton Ave beach every now and then. It was an all day outing and our parents would've killed us had they known. But that was when a kid went out and played and you just had to be home by dinner. I don't miss Illinois per se, but I do miss my family and the fun parts of Chicago so I go back about every six weeks or so.

If you haven't seen her street photography yet, check out photos by Vivian Meier. There is an interesting movie about her as well. She captured the downtrodden parts of the Chicago in the 60s and 70s as well as the north shore beaches. She was a nanny for some folks along the north shore but took the kids into the city for outings....like Maxwell Street! She developed her film but never showed the results. She lived in New York for a while as well. She had a storage locker full of undeveloped film and someone bought the contents after she stopped paying on it after she died. He developed the rolls and found a treasure trove! Movie is FInding Vivian Meier and its worth the time.

Cool photos.

Not a big fan of the romanticizing of Maxwell St. It was a rough area with peddlers selling stolen goods. My Dad got jumped there one Sunday afternoon. Another time, my friend and I got our fishing gear boosted at Montrose Harbor. Next day we went to Maxwell St. to reload and there in the corner, in our 5 gallon bucket was our gear. A little back and forth, we threatened to call the cops and we had our gear back.

What I AM a big fan of is a nice Maxwell Polish!

This lady has some cool stuff for those who miss home.
