I, too, wore shorts for the first time last Saturday for an assignment...."shorts" were actually long (down to my knees) and I wore sandals (not flipflops, don't own any of those).

The only reason I did so was because I was told the home was vacant and I had to be somewhere soon after (for which I didn't want to wear slacks and a nice top).

I have to say that I am with the crowd (or maybe the handful) of appraisers who think you should dress somewhat professional to be considered such.

I even get perturbed when going to CE classes and the appraisers look like they are going fishing! Last class I went to I would have to vote 'worst dressed CE class'.

I took a CE class in Florida about 5 years ago. Some clown was there wearing shorts, a wife beater, and no shoes.
