KLEZ Family Virus/Worm...ALERT

I have been getting at least 5 emails a day (usually more like 10) from folks I never heard of before, sending infected mail. My Norton has been working its' tail off. If your email is in any of those strings of jokes, chain letters, mass mailings, what ever, it will be sent to you too.

Just keep Norton active and updated.

Mell, thank goodness I am not as popular as you However, I get 2-3 infected e-mails a week. no problem yet. Thanks Norton Wade

These viruses send themselves to everyone in an infected users Outlook Express address book. Since the default setting for Outlook Express is to add every sender that you reply to, there will usually be hundreds or thousands of addresses in the address book.

So you may be in someone's address book that you sent an email to two years ago and you just don't remember them. Of course it isn't their fault either because they don't know they are infected.

As far a virus being sent from the NAIFA bulletin board, I don't see how that is possible since that bulletin board uses the "sendmail" feature of the server to send email and does not send attachments and can not get "infected" with a virus in the same way your local computer running Windows can.

It is possible that someone obtained your email address from the NAIFA bulletin board and sent you the virus on purpose, but pretty near impossible that you were sent the virus by the bulletin board system. I am pretty familiar with that system since we used to use it here.

So keep your virus program updated, no matter which one you use. I have used McAFee since the early 90's and it was just a command line DOS program that you scanned your system with. In those days you got viruses mostly from infected floppy disks.

It's always something.

Wayne, can't we change the default whereas each e-mail we get does not go into the address book. Wade

Yes! you can.

Go to "tools", then "options" and click the "send" tab. Uncheck "automatically put people I reply to in my address book"

Wayne,

That is the best piece of info I have received in a year! Thanks.

I intentionally do not keep an Outlook phonebook. But I still had someone receive the sircam virus through it when someone sent it to me. Now I can go fix that possibility, too.

I was complaining about my Norton suite until this virus came out. Now I am very happy with at least this portion of it!

Onward and upward.

The email references my old NAIFA email address when I was a member. Likely this was pulled up from an old email list somewhere. I am now being bombarded with email from parties claiming I am spamming them, so clearly someone is using my email address to spam. I don't use Outlook Express, don't like it since it is the most vunerable of all mail to viruses. AOL is very good at screening junk mail, but does not prevent it from showing up very well on the older software which I have, as I heard so many complaints about the new AOL software.

I recently signed up to Earthlink. Once I get responses from most of my buddies, I will be dropping AOL...probably before the end of the month. Earthlink at least has a junk box to block the trash permanently that is coming from one address.

Ter,

Yep, I thought as much. It did not come from the NAIFA site but from someone who had your e mail in their system. The new ones do not need an Outlook phonebook.

I use earthlink and it generally pretty good. I think you will be happy with it. Do not forget to make sure you have a good anti-virus program and run regular updates.
