Memory card speed compact flash

 That in between pics lag drives me nuts... anyone using the faster card got an idea how many 'counts' til you are good to go on the second shot?

I have more pics of blurred streetsides and retakes than I care to think about

Ted,

Bought the DX3900 when my faithful DC120 packed it in .. came with a 6 meg memory card .. put in a 32 Meg card and set camera to lowest resolution (.8 Meg) so that it holds 93 piccies .. more resolution than necessary for an appraisal report. Put them in and *.pdf at 4" x 6" .. huge improvement on transfer with the USB cable. Don't really need to be bothered with the USB reader, but the docking port would be nice. Will use the NiMh rechargeable AA batteries and doesn't use them up anywhere near as rapidly as did the DC40 or DC120. Got over 150 shots with the batteries that came with the camera, and anticipate 70-80 on the rechargeables ..

I should probably drop the resolution down but I take the occational spontanious picture of my kids and can't remeber to set it up for those so I just leave it on the high quality in the camara and drop the quality in the appraisal software if the file gets to big.

I've been using the rechargeables since the DC40 and really like them. I've got a charger that plugs into the car and keep a spare set ready to go.

just got one of those fancy fast cards(by Sandisk), holds 3300 basic quality pictures. sales person said it writes to memory 5x faster plus on sale plus 50$ rebate.

works for me

havent used it yet. saturday is my inspection day we'll see.

:?:

I guess its faster since they say it is. I cant notice, but then the camera shows the picture in preview for couple seconds anyway, I suppose I could turn that feature off, nah. It does however burn more battery life in a shorter time. Good side it holds zillions of pictures...that part is worth ever penny.

That is all :icecream:

Thanks for the review of the "faster" cards.

A couple of questions from this thread.

1. Why do you need faster cycle times? I always like to look at the preview screen to insure my picture is good..by then the camera has recycled.

2. Someone said they do 4 x 6 pics. Why? I dropped to the small digital size in Athena for two reasons. One it save tremendously on ink when printing hard copies and two....cut my file size considerable for faster edi.

I do have a recommendation on rechargeable batteries. I use the energizer ACCU type. Have never had a problem with them running out during an assignment. I now have three sets, one in each camera and one in the charger at all times.

I wasn't so much looking for faster cycle times as trying to minimize the lag between when I push the button on the DC5000 and when it actually takes the picture. The faster cycle time between pictures would be nice for my personal stuff when my kid is in motion and I shoot a series of pictures.

The thing to look for in batteries is the capacity rating, they run from 1000 mAH to 1800 mAH, a bigger number is better. NiMH batteries are better than NiCD batteries because they are less prone to memory. I bought a recharger that plugs into one of the power point (lighter) in by car. the brand is Powerex which was sold by Kodak as thier own. There are two number on the box Kodak SKU: 144-7671 and Maha P/N: MH-C204F-DC. This charger is nice because it can also condition the batteries. Conditioning is basically draining them down to near zero to mitigate the memory effect before it recharges them. I also think I'm going to by a charger for the office that is built by C. Crane Co. (www.ccrane.com), that is called a Quickcharger. This charger is nice because it will treat each battery individually rather that in pairs as most chargers do. There is a review on this charger in the December 2001 / January 2002 issue of Homepower magazine www.homepower.com, page 104.
