Alison,
If your lake is in Polk county were the majority of lakes are in Central Florida, here is a link that I use to determine the specs of the lake such as size, depth, water quality and clarity, etc:
http://www.polk.wateratlas.usf.edu/navigator/
Then I do a word search in MLS for other listings on the lake in question and see if other Realtors have marketed their properties as being positioned on "ski" lakes. I realize just because a Realtor states that it is on a "ski" lake doesn't make it a ski lake but if there is an absence of other Realtors stating that it is, then it likely is not. Additional sources of information or things that I consider are: are there docks, what size boats are docked (Bird's-eye view satellite images), knock on doors of neighboring waterfront properties and see what information they might have about their lake . . .
Here are the Water Atlas links for other counties in our Central Florida area:
Orange County - http://www.orange.wateratlas.usf.edu/navigator/
Lake County - http://www.lake.wateratlas.usf.edu/navigator/
