Modular Housing Labels

Not all HUD labels are red. I've seen them in blue and white as well as red. Sometimes the paint fades and all you can see is a faint outline of the lettering on the silver tag.

What is the wording on the label?

It is the wording on the HUD label that is important--not the color. All HUD labels leaving the factory are red--however as they age the color fades from bright red to orange to pink to none at all depending on how exposed they are to the elements. I have seen those on older double sectionals where the one under the porch roof, behind the dog house is still bright red but the one completely exposed to the elements has all the paint gone. And then there are those where the home owner paints over the label when they repaint the home. Those you have to scrape the paint off of the number so you can read it. Thats when a car key or credit card comes in handy.

Jo Ann,
At one time, that's what I thought as well. I even published it in the student handbook for the MH seminar. However, I found out I was originally misinformed and that there is no legal requirement for the tag to be red. A guy in Casper showed me an image of a blue label when I was teaching there. I also have an image of a white label with red letters that I shot on a dealer's lot in Bakersfield.

You are right Rich, I had forgotten about the few oddities out there. I should have worded my sentence: "Most HUD labels leaving the factory are typically red--" 3280.11 just describes the shape, size, material of the label, wording and doesn't have a word about color.

I've seen white labels but no blue labels. Red is the worst color to use for things outdoors because red is very sensitive to UV.

Labels? Labels?! We don' need no steeenkin' labels! :D

Thanks for the link. :)

The modular label I've seen have been affixed inside the house, in a closet.

Modular labels can be affixed anywhere on the exterior or interior or even in the attic fastened to a rafter depending on the requirements of that specific local or state entity.

Manufactured HUD labels can be in two locations. If the siding on the rear of the home as it is towed down the road was installed in the factory it will be at the lower left hand side about a foot above the bottom of the side and about a half foot in from the left hand side of the section. If the side on the rear of the home as it is towed down the road is installed on the site after the sections are joined, it will be at the lower left of the long side of the right hand section and at the lower right of the long side of the left hand section (same distance from the bottom and left/right hand sides.
