I could use some guidance here. I'm just a one man shop and have typical requirements of my machine. I have a Surface Pro for field work but I'm using a Dell Insperion for my office computer and it is showing signs of age. A long time ago I used a desktop but I'm not sure if it is necessary these days as I'm getting along just fine with my office laptop. And, if the power goes out I don't lose my work while the generator takes its time kicking in. My Dell guy recommended the Latitude 5550 BSX which is about $1300 with 16 gb ram and 512 ssd. It comes with a 13 gen i7 processor. Sounds good to me but there are so many other options out there. If any of you have suggestions I'd sure love to hear them. This machine will be used with external monitor and keyboard so screen rez, camera, etc are meaningless. Thanks

My tech built mine for $1100. 16 gig, 2 drives - 512 each solid state. Intel - But I had a monitor. I also have a CD installed 8 USB - 4 of them high speed. Very fast. I type fast so I do not rely upon laptops for report writing.

You might want to look into a LENOVO custom built ThinkPad PC. I basically chose the features I wanted 4 years ago and they built it to my specs. (That's an IBM company, BTW). ;)

go on line staples and office max, etc and look for sales, they also have weekly email sales. that will give you a bottom line for price. every week the send a flyer with sales. you can sign up to get them. i also look at he clock speed of the chip. they do vary, but faster is better if you spend additional on that part.

If you have to spend exta and get an external monitor an keyboard, why not just get a desktop? Cheaper and more sturdy, and you can use your dell as a backup .

i have everthing backed up, and a backup computer. it's slow now, so if my main computer went down i got time to redo a new one. but when really busy, you don't have the time frame to lose a day or two. and get backed up so everyone is angry. a backup comptuer is like insurance, or in my case it also let my wife have all the time she wanted, on her computer.

Thanks Terrel, if I end up with a desktop this will be my plan. I like the idea of getting something custom with no bloatware

I agree. Lenovo is up there in quality

I'll keep an eye out over there and see what comes up
