What resources have you found most helpful when starting out. The 1800 pages of the 4000.1 is daunting. Thanks for any advice.

The 4000.1 handbook is 1851 pages. It is not only for appraisers.
All FHA-Approved Mortgagees
All Direct Endorsement Underwriters
All Eligible Submission Sources for Condominium Project Approvals
All FHA Roster Appraisers
All FHA-Approved 203(k) Consultants
All FHA-Approved Title I Lenders
All HUD-Approved Housing Counselors
All HUD-Approved Nonprofit Organizations
All Governmental Entity Participants
All Real Estate Brokers
All Closing Agents

The main section concerning appraisers is 70 pages.

D. APPRAISER AND PROPERTY REQUIREMENTS FOR TITLE II FORWARD AND REVERSE MORTGAGES

Pages 807 through 877.

Go to https://www.HUD.gov/program_offices/administration/hudclips/handbooks/hsgh and download the latest updated pdf version.

Print "Section D" to pdf. Read through it once to familiarize yourself with the content. It is easy reading, the language used is basic appraiser jargon. Then when needed use search (ctl+f) to find keywords.

There aren't 1,800 pages that apply to appraisers.

just read the section about what they want in an appraisal, basically a narrative report with detail. pretty sure very few have actually read that part, but those of us who have. well, it's hard to finish reading, considering it just gave you a headache about what they want to be in da report.
if you ever get a review back from them, it will state page and paragraph number of what you did wrong. and don't wet your pants when you see a certified letter from HUD. it actually made me improve my appraisal overall. FHA continuing online, or webinar, 7 hour class is pretty good in overall stuff. you should take it now and get credit for it to.

1. For refis and purchases, you do not need 1800 pages.

Download or print to PDF the entire handbook.

From there, print to PDF only the D. Appraiser and Property Requirements for Title II Forward and Reverse Mortgages +-pages 564-622. Depending on what print to PDF you are using, it can be off.

2. Now that you have it saved to your desktop, you can simply use the search feature that is built into your PDF program. (find on page)

For example, handrails in Title II Insured Housing Programs Forward Mortgages2. Default Servicing DOES NOT APPLY TO US.

The Mortgagee must repair damaged or missing handrails or stair treads on elevated exterior porches, patios, decks, and balconies where the distance from the finished floor to the ground surface is greater than 18 inches.
