In some professions, they call that a retainer. In appraising, apparently some folks work on spec, hoping their work will create client need for more work that will actually be paid for.

Its funny, I am sitting here writing an engagement letter to an attorney for a divorce case, 1 retro value on the day they signed the separation papers in 2006, and a current value. I was thinking of only asking for 50% up front, but I might just require the whole thing, since attorneys work this way regularly.
