I have been saying for years the voters in America are spread out similar to a "Bell Curve". You have your far left and far right, but the majority are somewhere in the middle. The successful politician understands this and makes every attempt to push their opponent as far left or right as they can. Then they begin moving slowly in that same direction, resulting in their capturing a larger percentage of the vote. They know their opponent's supporters are not going to vote for them, but they also know that those near the dividing line could go either way and those on their side of the dividing line are not going to jump across that line and vote for their opponent.
While the extreme left and right have been extended out further from the majority in the middle, I just don't see how a true liberal or conservative will be elected on a national basis. There will be pockets that will elect one extreme or the other and fortunately that has the most impact on the House and those individuals can be counter balanced by the other side.
I would love to got back to the days when the two sides could sit down and have a civil conversation. Each strongly representing their particular view, but understanding that in order to move things forward and to improve things for their constituents they need to compromise. Neither side will get everything they want, but both sides can point to certain gains then say this is the best deal we could get and we will continue to work towards reaching our goals.
