Oil & The Economy

I miss the local gas wars when i was in college in the 70's.
22.9 here a lot. I graduated in 72. Home was 120 miles from college. I would not have been home often if we had had today's prices.

And car gas mileage has greatly improved since 1970s. Thank goodness from CA lead in forcing car companies to improve their mileage.

They led the way on pollution control by wrecking gas mileage. So, the 18 mpg you got in 65 became 12 mpg in 1974. So, you used 50% more gasoline, but the exhaust was cleaner per CU. ft.... just 50% more of it. Zero gain for the environment.

True! In the 1990's you could get a lean burning 4-cylinder Honda or Toyota that gave you over 40mpg. The problem was they could not meet strict California emissions. As goes California, so goes the nation, and those lean burning 4-cylinders went away :(

I just did my smog test. Cheapest I could find was $50. The car passed.
If didn't pass, I would have sold it and gotten a new car. Next time for an Audi.

So, one unreliable German car for another unreliable German car...next you will buy a Range Rover, arguably the most unreliable auto on the road.
Be smart and buy a Lexus if you got that kind of money.

Guess what? We don't have to have smog tests here :) Nor even safety inspections...but if a cop pulls you over and there is a safety issue the ticket might not be all that cheap.

I am thinking about finding a 60s model Ford or Chevy pickup and having the whole thing tricked out like new and getting rid of the unreliable and expensive new electronic cars. Same with appliances. My mechanically operated Washer/dryer has served me well for almost 30 years. My niece gets to replace hers about every 6-8 years. Now I don't know how anyone can claim that it is better for the environment to replace a machine every few years over one that uses more electricity but lasts 5x longer.

My Tesla is exempt from smog tests.
EV is way to go........ as a second car.

Commuter distances back and forth to work, shopping, no long distances or towing- it would be great but I'd want a charging station about 100 feet from the closest dwelling or garage. State Farm is just pulling their own chargers in their parking garage in fear of danger and I am sure a company like State Farm has a pretty good actuarial view of the fire potential.

And I'd like to have an EV ATV but with conventional deep cycle batteries - limited fire danger.

I have a '15 VW Jetta diesel stick that I routinely get 45-50 mpg in. Of course, they had to quit importing them because of dieselgate, so I guess I'll have to drive this one till my kids take my keys away.
