Perhaps someone who has used or is using pcAnywhere can answer this for me:

My "host" computer uses a cable connection (Time Warner Roadrunner).

Can my "remote" be a dialup-modem laptop? Or do both computers have to be either modem or cable? I can't find the answer in my User's Guide. (I also can't seem to make the connection).

are trying to use the road runner on your lap top?

If so you will have to network them and eithor use a wireless router or network cable.

Hall -

I should have been more specific. My laptop has the dialup modem. I will be the "remote'. I had planned to use it while out of town, to access my office computer (the "host") which is the one that has Roadrunner cable.

So, the router idea isn't applicable.

Does it sound like my idea should work or is it a problem with the laptop being dialup?

Dial up is usually too slow for this type of connection. I usually use a free local WiFi hot spot to connect to my home computer while traveling. Many are available in most areas, Panera Bread, Microtel and Krystal are three I comonly use.

Take a look at this site:

http://avvenu.com/

I installed AVVENU on my office computer in about ten minutes yesterday. I then went home and accessed my office computer from home in seconds. My office computer is on the net with Charter broadband and my home computer is on the net with a dial up modem.

It worked very well and fairly quickly but I have not really had time to explore the functionality yet.

AVVENU is free. Worth a try.

AVVENU is reviewed here:

Although I feel their advertising is VERY deceptive, I did find "Go To My PC" a real good remote PC using program. I used "PC Anywhere", and found "go to my PC" superior, easier, and more flexible. It is more than file sharing, it is remote controllong of your computer. It will work with ANY internet connection...

Dave beat me to it... FREEBIES!!!

VNC is also free, and does the same as the pay 'fer versions. ;)

I need to do the same with my lap top when on the road. I tested the trial version of "gotomypc" which is a similar program and was disappointed with the results.

Thanks to everyone for the responses to my posting.
