Pine Trees In Georiga

Thanks. That looks like heavy duty stuff.
My father lives in a PUD that is in a heavily pine forest area (it was a former Boise-Cascade tree farm) and those Pines needles are a huge nuisance for homeowners in pine forests as they get all over the roof (and clog any unscreened gutters), yard, gardens, driveway. etc. and crate a constant mess that needs to be cleaned up several times per year.

An interesting side note. After some wind driven fires destroyed several apartments and townhouses in Raleigh in 2010 and a prior fire in 2007, pine straw is no longer allowed as mulch within 10 feet of multifamily dwellings. There was also a change to the building code that now prohibits vinyl soffits in multifamily buildings. It was a very windy day both times and the dry pine needles at the base of the wall provided a fast burning material that allowed the fire to run up the walls of the building through the vinyl soffits and into the attics in a very short amount of time resulting in total losses and no hope for the fire department etc.

Fort Lewis in Washington has a type of ant that I've been told was brought in specifically to keep the ground clear of pine needles.

Formica obscuripes

Although most of the base is covered in evergreen trees there are few needles on the ground because this type of ant picks them up and builds large mounds out of them. Typically the mounds are about two feet wide and a foot tall but some can be much larger.

I hate pine trees. My mom and dad have a house that is surrounded by pine trees. Pine cones clog the riding mower, pain in the butt to get up.......and the pollen....yellow dust storm.

I hear you....that yellow pollen is very annoying

Dogwoods and Azaleas are lovers or pine straw due to the acid content. The Masters would never look so good on TV or in person without the influence of pine straw on the native and planted flora.
