Question about your State Appraisal Board?

I would second Mr Raney's remarks with a capital FUNDING. We need FUNDING.

So, do you support increasing licensing fees? As more and more licensees leave the industry it will become worse for available funds. In CA they kept the renewal fees the same but DECREASED the term of the license from 4 years to two years....effectively DOUBLING the renewal fee. OREA is under the auspices of the California Department of Transportation. Odd, is it not? That agency, itself, is under funded. I think it should be part of the agency that oversees barbers, hair dressers, toes and finger nails. That's called the Board of Cosmetology. Cosmetics seem like a fitting overseer! More so than the Department of Transportation.

In reality, it should be subsidized by the Departments of real estate and banking, since they make most of the rules anyway.

California's board would have funding if they'd stop giving it to the Governator. Apparently the board loaned it to the general fund???? or Arnie dipped into it. Either way, the state board claims they have enough investigators even though they're something like 3 years behind in investigations??????

Actually Mr Boyd, I support the fees we have going to our board. Instead they go into the general fund and we get a pittance of what we put in. If all the money went to US ... I would be in favor of funding the department to the level it needs to be funded. Right now we have an administrator (who oversees two boards) and a secretary. All other work is done on a volunteer basis and that is sad, however, becasue our license fees go into the general fund we are not allocated enough to operate.

How very strange. We are currently regarded as one of the CAUSES of the current recession yet we do not even have an Agency of our own. This smacks of taxation without representation. I think there was a revolution a few years ago (225+) initiated by that very thing.

At a CE course where the Director and some investigators where there, the Director stated that the agency lent money to the general fund because they didn't need it themselves. They claimed they had enough investigators, even though it's rumored that they are 3 years behind in investigations. So... from the horse's mouth.

They lent it? When is payback..with interest, I assume? If that is true, why, then did they effectively double the renewal fees a few years ago by decreasing the term of our licenses from 4 years to 2 years?

I don't believe ANYTHING these turkeys tell us anymore. They must think we are stupid!

Not ALL matters, but they do pretty good and have improved immensely

Do you think the members of your appraisal board understand USPAP?

Does anyone "understand" USPAP? We all have our own interpretations. Overall, I think that our board is well read in USPAP but some interpret it differently from me....that is the problem with USPAP.

Do you think you would receive a fair hearing if you were brought before your board??

Probably. But I doubt I would have to go before a full board unless it was a really bizarre case. You first go to a 2 person (and these will be appraisers) hearing and I think in most instances I shouldn't have to go past that. Either roll over play dead on some trivial matter or explain it away.

Underfunded, understaffed. They stopped answering the phone - not enough money to hire someone. Refuse to yank licenses where it's grossly warranted. And I know the past and current head of the dept. Just totally hamstrung.
