Realtor Board Dues

Cost of doing business.
When your area is close to 3 states and 4 MLS's the cost is too high...Had one that insisted I join NAR when I was already a member...?? 2 memberships?

Access to MLS requires a fee, being a board member requires a fee; IMO definitely worth it for access to information & resources, we do both NAR & CAR here, I have it for both licenses. There was a period when you could do an associate at about 1/2 price, but that was some time back.

Hello, I am a Certified Residential Appraiser in Tennessee. Until recently, I thought Realtor board dues on top of MLS subscription fee where required by all appraisers in all states. I'd like to take a poll to get a glimpse of which states do require board membership and which do not. The reason behind that is I am also a member of the Appraisal Institute which is relevant to my role as an appraiser. If you could reply with a yes or no followed by your state, I would appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day.
In WA it depends on the MLS, in our area we have to be Members, including taking their stupid ethics class. In other areas of the State you don't have to.

As a Realtor, you have your primary association. You can join other Realtor associations (other MLS areas) and not have to pay state/national dues. You may be subject to local association dues and access fees.

Not here. I tried. Refused to accept my application because I was out of state therefore, they required me to pay for a second NAR national membership. Not gonna happen. A few years later they changed but don't know why or when. I am an associate member and pay no NAR national dues nor do I have to take the ethics class.

Interesting situation. Never encountered crossing state borders.

Realtors are issued a NRDS number, which is national, so I see where you would challenge paying another national due because you only get one NRDS number per person. You join an association (primary), you are given your NRDS number and a pledge pin. You should be able to drive down the road to the next association, join by paying the local association office entry fee and start your monthly MLS access fees. Rinse and repeat.

An associate member, or whatever definition any association would call it, may be cheaper by only offering MLS access with no voting privileges. Still a prerequisite to be a member of the national and state Realtor association to gain membership to the local association, who runs/manages the MLS service.

I think this is a fight you can easily win.

California: you do not have to be a REALTOR (member of NAR-CAR) to obtain limited MLS access for obtaining comparable's. Appraiser's can join for MLS access only.

Fact in California.....a licensed BROKER (very different than a licensed salesperson) can get MLS access without being a REALTOR. They cannot force you to be a member of CAR-NAR to get MLS access. You just cannot call yourself a REALTOR.

I am a Certified Residential Appraiser in Southeast Virginia. We do not have to be members of NAR, but MLS fees are higher for appraisers than Realtors. I pay $1,560 per year.

THAT is a money grab. That's more than I pay in Calfornia as a full on broker each year.
