I was told that Patel is Indian for "hotel owner". Either that's true or it's just the greatest coincidence of the century because almost every hotel sale I've ever seen was Mr. Patel selling to Mr. Patel. Anyone else notice that trend?

OMG.....My MAI mentor and I had that discussion about Patel's owning Motels last time we did one (March 2007).

TODAY (I swear!!!!!!), I am confirming a land sale and am eventually routed to a phone number. The phone number is a motel, and the owner is named Patel, and the land sale is for a new hotel.

If you don't believe me, send me a PM and I will give you all the info.

Patels in my area own convenience stores and gas stations.

Patel always reminds me of Glengarry Glen Ross. I'd link the .wav file but its NSFW.

The "Patel motel" phenomenon, as it is popularly known, has made a major impact on the American hospitality industry.
As many as 60% of mid-sized motels and hotel properties, all over the US, are owned by the people of Indian origin.
Of this nearly one-third have the surname Patel - a popular one among Indian Guajaratis.

Rajiv Bhatia, President of Knights Franchise System, owned by Cendant Hotel Corporation, traces the path of Indians in the hospitality industry. "The trend started in the early 1940's, though the real growth took place in the 1960's and 1970's."

Way off the original topic.

What does any of posts #8 thru 15 have to do with the original thread and discussion. If there are no more answers to the original question I'm going to lock the thread as it seems to have gone way off course.

I still don't understand what "return of appraiser" means. Is that just legal speak for the appraisal itself? What the appraiser "returned" to satisfy the appraisal request?

I've heard it means "Inn Keeper." Yes, I've seen it for years. Maybe east Indian hotel owners change their names when they buy one. "When you buy one, you "R" one." LOL

I do not know why they call it that, but what it is is a notarized Affidavit signed by the appraiser that goes with the appraisal so the appraiser does not have to go to court and state the value of the appraisal to record. I do them everyweek, looks like this, but I have my own, http://www.jud.ct.gov/external/super/Standorders/NewHaven/AffidavitAppraiser.doc.
